The Presidential Digital Platform Government Committee (Chairman Ko Jin hereinafter DPGC) and the Ministry of Science and ICT (Minister Lee Jong-ho hereinafter MSIT) in collaboration with the National Information Society Agency (President Hwang Jong-sung hereinafter NIA) are set to launch the 2024 hyper-scale AI public service development project.

The hyper-scale AI service development support project which aims to accelerate the use of AI in the public sector and realize a digital platform government has seen a significant budget increase from 400 million KRW last year to 7.7 billion KRW this year.

This year to foster the creation of AI-utilized services in a broader range of public sectors the project has been divided into three areas: Public General Public Specialized and Issue Resolution*. A total of eight projects including AI labor inspectors smart fire safety and communication support for the disabled have been selected for service development support.

(Public General) Services commonly usable across public sectors like civil complaints and administration with potential for future expansion.
(Public Specialized) Services trained on domain-specific knowledge or data from public institutions.
(Issue Resolution) Services aimed at addressing social issues such as healthcare welfare etc.
To this end the DPGC and MSIT chaired by Chairman Ko Jin held the Integrated Agreement Ceremony for Hyper-Scale AI Service Development Support on July 15 with relevant demand departments and institutions including the Seoul Fire Disaster Headquarters Ministry of Employment and Labor Korean Intellectual Property Office Rural Development Administration Ministry of National Defense and the National Research Council for Economics Humanities and Social Sciences as well as AI supply companies. The ceremony reviewed specific project goals and implementation plans for each of the eight projects.

(Participants) Chairman of the DPGC Director of Information and Communication Policy at MSIT representatives from demand departments/institutions for each of the eight projects AI supply companies totaling over 50 participants.
Chairman Ko Jin of the DPGC stated “In the silent AI war between nations we must strive to be the first in the world to implement a government-exclusive hyper-scale AI model and leverage this success model for export. To achieve this we need to create various successful cases of effectively utilizing hyper-scale AI in the public sector. I urge everyone to ensure that each of the eight projects signed today becomes exemplary cases of AI services in our public sector.”

Additionally Minister of MSIT Lee Jong-ho said “Through this project we hope to actively introduce hyper-scale AI into the public domain and strengthen the utilization capabilities of domestic hyper-scale AI models thus enabling Korea to leap to the level of the worlds top three AI powerhouses. As this will expand opportunities for our citizens to enjoy innovative services based on hyper-scale AI in both public and daily life I hope each institution will do their best.”
