National Institute of Forest Science Supports Preservation and Management of National Heritage Huaeom Plum with Technology That Saved Waryong Plum!
National Institute of Forest Science Signs Agreement to Cultivate Successor Trees of Huaeom Temples Natural Monument Huaeom Plum and Wild Cherry Trees
The Forest Biological Resources Research Department of the National Institute of Forest Science (Director Lee Im-kyun) announced on July 31 2024 that it has signed a cooperation agreement for the protection and enhancement of the ecological and cultural value of natural and cultural heritage with the Jeonnam Office of Jirisan National Park (Director Kim Eun-chang) the 19th Headquarters of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhisms Huaeom Temple (Head Monk Deokmoon) Gurye County (Governor Kim Soon-ho) Southern Research Forest of Seoul National University (Acting Director Kim Myung-pil) and the National Museum of Suncheon University (Director Yang Suk-hyang).
This agreement is a proactive response to the threat of damage to natural and cultural heritage due to climate change. It aims to collaborate on the propagation and conservation of natural monuments (wild cherry trees and Huaeom plums) within Huaeom Temple as well as the investigation excavation and information exchange regarding cultural resources in Jirisan National Park.
Under the agreement the Forest Biological Resources Research Department of the National Institute of Forest Science plans to propagate and conserve successor trees of the natural monuments (wild cherry trees and Huaeom plums) in cooperation with Huaeom Temple Gurye County and the Jeonnam Office of Jirisan National Park. These efforts aim to utilize these trees as tourist resources for visitors to Huaeom Temple and Gurye County.
In March 2024 the Forest Biological Resources Research Department successfully cultivated 10 red plum and 5 white plum successor trees of the Waryong Plum a repatriated and returned cultural heritage and has since been preserving and managing them.
Dr. Koo Ja-jung from the Forest Biological Resources Research Department stated To ensure the stable preservation of the Huaeom Plum a proud symbol of the thousand-year-old Huaeom Temple we will support and utilize the technology for cultivating successor trees of natural monuments that the National Institute of Forest Science has accumulated since 2013.
