The Cultural Heritage Administration’s Royal Palaces and Tombs Center (Director Lee Jae-pil) in collaboration with the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation (President Choi Young-chang) will hold a photo contest themed ‘Beautiful Hanbok Stories in Ancient Palaces’ from August 5 to September 8.

The ‘Beautiful Hanbok Stories in Ancient Palaces’ photo contest is part of the 10th Autumn Palace Culture Festival 2024 (October 9 - October 13) aimed at raising interest in the palaces and promoting the beauty of traditional Korean Hanbok.

The contest is open to all Korean citizens and foreigners residing in Korea. Participants can submit photos of individuals wearing Hanbok taken within the past year at the Four Grand Palaces (Gyeongbokgung Changdeokgung Deoksugung Changgyeonggung) and Jongmyo Shrine. The submission period is from August 5 to September 8 and entries can be submitted through the contest website (www.한복이야기사진공모.com). Each person can submit up to two photos. Detailed information is available on the Royal Palaces and Tombs Center website (royal.khs.go.kr) or the Palace Culture Festival website (kh.or.kr/fest).

The contest website will be accessible from August 5.
A total of 50 winning entries will be selected through a two-round judging process and winners will receive certificates and prizes. The grand prize (Cultural Heritage Administration Director’s Award) winner will receive a luxury custom Hanbok voucher worth 2 million KRW. Two first prize winners (Royal Palaces and Tombs Center Director’s Award Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation President’s Award) will each receive traditional craft cultural product sets worth 1 million KRW. Three second prize winners (Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation President’s Award) will each receive traditional craft cultural product sets worth 500000 KRW. Five third prize winners (Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation President’s Award) will each receive traditional craft cultural product sets worth 300000 KRW.

The winning entries will be exhibited at Gyeongbokgung Palaces Gyejodang during the Autumn Palace Culture Festival allowing visitors to appreciate the beautiful Hanbok photos harmonizing with the palace surroundings.

In addition to the Hanbok photo contest the Royal Palaces and Tombs Center will host various programs and lectures at the Autumn Palace Culture Festival to experience the unique beauty of Hanbok. During the upcoming “2024 Hanbok Culture Week” (October 14 - October 20) in collaboration with the Korea Craft & Design Foundation there will be a free Hanbok rental and commemorative photo event at Changgyeonggung Palace. The center plans to continue promoting Hanbok beauty and advancing Hanbok culture as a representative Korean culture through various initiatives.

Hanbok Culture Week: A nationwide Hanbok cultural event held annually during the third week of October to spread the culture of wearing Hanbok in everyday life (Organized by the Korea Craft & Design Foundation).
