Innovation Growth Based on Patent Big Data! Korean Intellectual Property Office Listens to Voices from Outstanding Companies in the Materials Parts and Equipment Sector
Hanil Hi-Tech Achieves First Successful Localization of Cryogenic Bearings with Support from Patent-Based R&D Strategy
On August 6th at 3 PM the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) Commissioner Kim Wan-ki visited Hanil Hi-Tech Co. Ltd. in Hwaseong Gyeonggi Province to hear firsthand from a leading company in the materials parts and equipment sector and to promote intellectual property policies that work in the field.
This visit aimed to review the outcomes of the Patent-Based R&D Strategy Support Project (IP-R&D) supported by KIPO and to explore effective intellectual property policy support.
Hanil Hi-Tech Co. Ltd. is a specialized company in components and materials used in advanced industries such as semiconductors and displays. Through the IP-R&D project the company successfully applied the acquired technology to product development achieving the first successful localization of cryogenic bearings for LNG pumps. The developed product was successfully tested in collaboration with Korea Gas Corporation at the worlds largest LNG production base in Pyeongtaek and has been designated as an innovative product by the Ministry of Trade Industry and Energy set to be applied nationwide at LNG production bases. Building on this success Hanil Hi-Tech is now challenging the development of advanced bearings for special environments (high temperature cryogenic high vacuum) used in space launch vehicles and exploration rovers.
Cryogenic bearings for LNG pumps are machine elements that support and rotate the shaft in LNG transport (ships) and storage (bases) at -163°C enduring high-speed rotation (about 3600 rpm) and high pressure (7 MPa).
During the meeting KIPO explained its support policies and systems including the Patent-Based R&D Strategy Support Project (IP-R&D) and the newly implemented Industrial Property Information Act effective from August 7 2024. They also listened to the companies difficulties related to intellectual property.
The Industrial Property Information Management and Utilization Promotion Act (enacted on February 6 2024 effective August 7 2024)
KIPO Commissioner Kim Wan-ki stated R&D based on patent big data analysis is the key to eliminating uncertainties regarding domestic and international patent barriers and quickly localizing cryogenic LNG pump bearings for the first time in Korea. KIPO will significantly expand various supports using patent data to secure advanced strategic technologies and preempt core patents.
