Exhibition of Modern Architectural Heritage Competition Winners (August 13-22 Seoul Urban Architecture Center) and Related Academic Conference (August 13 Seoul Museum of History)

The Cultural Heritage Administration (Director Choi Eung-chun) will showcase the winning works from the Coexistence: A New Breath for Modern Architectural Cultural Heritage competition (held from April 1 to June 30) at an exhibition at the Seoul Urban Architecture Center in Jongno-gu Seoul from August 13 to 22. Additionally a related academic conference and awards ceremony will be held on August 13 at the Seoul Museum of History in Jongno-gu Seoul.

The competition invited innovative ideas for the utilization of several registered cultural heritage sites including modern commercial and residential buildings within the modern historical and cultural district of Jinhae Changwon Gyeongsangnam-do. A total of 120 entries were submitted by 211 teams (including individuals) of university students nationwide. The exhibition will feature 32 winning works that were selected through a two-stage review process for their creative proposals that preserve the value and significance of modern architectural heritage.

The grand prize the Cultural Heritage Administration Director’s Award was awarded to Choi Min-hee (Dong-A University) for her proposal titled Between Black and White: A Prototype for a Vibrant Everyday Spectrum which suggests transforming the Daecheon-dong 2-8 Block home to the Jinhae Heukbaek Tea House into a sustainable Chungmu district. The Chairman of the National Architecture Policy Committee Award was given to Kwak Eun-seo and Jung Joon (Seoul National University of Science and Technology) for their proposal Timid Rooting which suggests a new structure for the Daehyeong-dong Modern Commercial and Residential Building. The President of the Korean Association of Architectural History Award went to Cho Yo-han Choi Se-young and Hong Ji-soo (Chosun University) for their proposal titled Sky Hole: A Space Connecting Past Present and Future which reinterprets iconic modern historical buildings in Jinhae such as the Daehyeong-dong Modern Commercial and Residential Building Ilgwang Laundry and the Former Jinhae Naval Commanders Residence into spaces of communication.

The winning teams received cash prizes totaling 20 million KRW with the grand prize (Cultural Heritage Administration Director’s Award) worth 6 million KRW and the special prizes (Chairman of the National Architecture Policy Committee Award and President of the Korean Association of Architectural History Award) each worth 3 million KRW.

The exhibition is open to the public free of charge at the Seoul Urban Architecture Center from 10 AM to 6 PM on weekdays and weekends. However the exhibition will be closed on August 17 (Saturday) 18 (Sunday) and 19 (Monday) due to museum closure.

On the opening day of the exhibition August 13 the Seoul Museum of History will host the awards ceremony for the competition and an academic conference focusing on the sustainable preservation and utilization techniques for modern architectural cultural heritage.

The first part of the conference will feature the awards ceremony followed by presentations and discussions with the grand prize and special prize winners. The second part will include two keynote lectures on topics such as Expansion and Diversity of Modern Architectural Cultural Heritage (Yoon In-seok Professor Emeritus at Sungkyunkwan University) and five thematic presentations covering case studies of preservation and restoration techniques for modern architectural heritage in Korea and abroad including the Samil Building and the Busan Mayors Residence.

A comprehensive discussion involving the presenters and other experts in the field will follow the thematic presentations.

The Cultural Heritage Administration hopes that this competition and academic conference will increase public interest in modern architectural cultural heritage and plans to continue offering opportunities to discover and promote innovative ideas for the preservation and utilization of national heritage.
