The Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA) will operate a National Heritage R&D Technology Pavilion at the 2024 World Cultural Heritage Industry Expo held from September 10 to 12 at the Gyeongju HICO Convention Center (Bomun Tourist Complex Gyeongju) showcasing cutting-edge technologies that combine advanced science with the preservation and utilization of national heritage.

To promote the development and application of national heritage technologies the CHA established the 1st National Heritage Preservation Management and Utilization R&D Basic Plan (2021-2025) and has been carrying out 15 R&D projects under the Development of Smart Preservation and Utilization Technologies for National Heritage initiative. This five-year project launched in 2021 is supported by approximately KRW 48.9 billion from the Ministry of Science and ICT.

In this year’s National Heritage R&D Technology Pavilion (3rd floor New Technology Hall) visitors will be introduced to seven key projects now in their fourth year that have reached the commercialization stage and are ready for industrial application. Highlights include an intelligent theft alarm and real-time tracking system for cultural heritage sites in remote areas without power or communication infrastructure and AI-based technology that converts traditional architectural hand drawings into 3D CAD models. Attendees will have the opportunity to experience these cutting-edge technologies firsthand and consultations with buyers for technology transfers and product sales will also be available.

Seven featured projects include: ▲ Autonomous underwater vehicles for the investigation of submerged cultural heritage ▲ H-BIM intelligent wooden architecture modeling for historical preservation ▲ AI-based CAD conversion for traditional architectural hand drawings ▲ Ultra-high-resolution gigapixel 3D data generation technology ▲ Intelligent theft alarm and real-time tracking system for isolated heritage sites ▲ Radiation-based fumigation alternatives for emergency conservation treatment of movable heritage in disaster response ▲ Smart exploration equipment for cultural heritage investigations.
In addition to the technology pavilion the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage (NRICH) will operate an exhibition space (Booth 1st Floor E-Promotion Hall) where visitors can engage closely with national heritage. The Experience of Traditional Architecture’s Gongpo (Bracket System) exhibit will allow visitors to observe up close the key elements of traditional architecture including gongpo a bracket system constructed by master carpenters (daemok). Additionally the Baekje and Silla Pottery Exhibition will offer hands-on experiences allowing visitors to touch and compare the pottery preferences of the Baekje and Silla aristocracy while also demonstrating non-destructive pottery investigation equipment using ultraviolet light.
* Daemok: A master carpenter skilled in traditional wooden architecture responsible for planning designing constructing and overseeing other carpenters on a project.
* Gongpo: A bracket system atop columns incorporating decorative and structural elements like judo soro chimcha and salmi supporting the eaves. The styles vary including dapo jusimpo and ikgong.

The CHA hopes that through the operation of the National Heritage R&D Technology Pavilion the public will enjoy and appreciate the technological achievements that have contributed to the development of the national heritage industry. The CHA is committed to continuing its proactive efforts to share the results of national heritage research with the public in engaging and accessible ways.
