‘Night of the Artists’: Government and Corporations Join Forces to Elevate Korean Art

The Ministry of Culture Sports and Tourism (Minister Yoo In-chon) in collaboration with LG Electronics* (CEO Cho Joo-wan) hosted the Night of the Artists an event celebrating the Korean Art Festival* on Wednesday September 4 at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) Seoul. Minister Yoo attended the event where he met with both domestic and international key figures in the art world as well as representatives from corporate sponsors of the arts and pledged to support the global promotion of Korean art and artists.
* LG Electronics is sponsoring the Night of the Artists and signed a three-year exclusive partnership (starting August 2024) with the MMCA for the MMCA X LG OLED series of exhibitions offering exclusive technological support.

Major International Art Figures Attend Confirming High Interest in Korean Art

The Night of the Artists event was strategically planned to coincide with international art events such as the Gwangju Biennale Busan Biennale and the Kiaf Frieze Seoul during which a concentration of international museum directors curators and art enthusiasts visit Korea. The event was designed to strategically promote Korean art and artists to a global audience during this period.

Over 200 participants attended including emerging and established Korean artists representatives from Korean galleries biennales art fairs cultural arts sponsors as well as international museum directors curators and media representatives. Notable attendees included Mariët Westermann director of the Guggenheim Museum in New York Jean-François Bélisle director of the National Gallery of Canada Simon Fox CEO of Frieze Art Fair and Ben Eastham editor of e-Flux. Their presence demonstrated the high demand and interest in Korean art.

The venue also featured special editions of major international art magazines such as Art Newspaper ArtAsiaPacific ArtReview and Frieze Magazine focusing on Korean art. Additionally copies of the MMCA’s publication Korean Art 1900-2020 which provides an overview of 120 years of modern and contemporary Korean art along with other MMCA catalogs were displayed for attendees to explore.

Emphasizing the Importance of Cultural Sponsorship and Comprehensive Support for Korean Art and Artists’ Global Advancement

Before the event Minister Yoo met with prominent corporate sponsors of the arts including Yoon Young-dal chairman of Crown Haitai Holdings Koo Ja-yeol chairman of the board at LS Holdings Kim Hee-geun chairman of Byucksan Engineering and LG Electronics CEO Cho Joo-wan. Minister Yoo stressed the importance of corporate sponsorship for the arts and urged companies to continue fostering symbiotic relationships between business and the arts.

Minister Yoo stated “While global interest in Korean art is growing there are still many talented and promising Korean artists who have not yet been introduced to the international stage. I hope this event serves as an opportunity for international art professionals to discover and connect with Korean artists.” He added “The Ministry of Culture Sports and Tourism will continue to promote the capabilities of Korean art worldwide and provide comprehensive support for Korean artists to expand into global markets.”
