State-of-the-art AR (Augmented Reality) technology is now an everyday feature at museums and art galleries enhancing how we experience cultural heritage and art. With AR technology bringing artifacts and art to life in new ways let’s explore how science and technology are transforming the way we engage with cultural and artistic exhibitions.

National Museum of Korea: Personalized AR Exhibition Guides for Easier Viewing

In May 2024 the National Museum of Korea launched a new exhibition guide app utilizing AR technology. Unlike previous guide apps this one directs visitors to specific artifacts and galleries they are interested in while also offering fascinating AR content for 18 key artifacts. Visitors can explore the stories behind these objects their uses and how they’ve been restored. For instance by activating the AR content for the Silla King Jinheungs Stele on Mount Bukhan visitors can experience a panoramic view as if they were standing atop Mount Bukhan delivering a vivid historical scene through augmented reality. This digital experience allows visitors to go beyond just viewing artifacts and helps them deeply understand their historical context uses and restored appearances.

Pohang Museum of Art: AR Docent Tours and Game Quests for Enjoyable Art Viewing

In April 2023 the Pohang Museum of Art developed an AR docent app that brings 21 outdoor sculptures in Hwanho Park created by artists like Moon Shin Choi Man-lin Lee U-hwan and Park Bae-jong to life. With Pohang’s mascots Yeon-o and Seo-o guiding visitors through the artworks the app explains the stories behind each sculpture. In addition visitors can take part in AR game quests related to the sculptures enhancing their understanding of the artworks. Completing all the quests unlocks rewards adding fun and excitement to the experience. This app extends the opportunity to appreciate art even from afar as it allows users to access information about the artworks anytime anywhere without physically visiting the park.

The examples of the National Museum of Korea and the Pohang Museum of Art demonstrate how science and technology are enriching our cultural and artistic experiences. AR technology goes beyond merely delivering information—it offers a new way to interpret and engage with artifacts and artworks. As science and technology continue to bring cultural heritage and art closer to us we can look forward to more immersive and meaningful cultural experiences in the future.
