The Cultural Heritage Administration (Director Choi Eung-cheon) will participate in the 2024 New Technology Convergence Content Global Festival: The Eoullim hosted by the Ministry of Culture Sports and Tourism and the Korea Creative Content Agency. The event will take place at Saatchi Gallery in London UK from October 18 to 27 where they will present a media art exhibition titled Mieum Wanbo (微吟緩步): Byeolseo Garden the Ideal of the Scholar’s Life which showcases the representative traditional Korean landscape known as the Byeolseo Garden.

Byeolseo Garden: A garden built by Joseon dynasty scholars outside their homes often in scenic locations as a retreat for rest and seclusion.
Mieum Wanbo (微吟緩步): A term from Sangchun-gok (Song of Spring) by Jeong Geuk-in (1401–1481) meaning to quietly hum while walking slowly. It reflects not just the appreciation of a garden but an aesthetic process of communing with nature and contemplating one’s inner self.
The Byeolseo Garden media art presented by the Cultural Heritage Administration was created using precise digital measurements of traditional Korean gardens accumulated since 2021. The exhibition features four Byeolseo Gardens—Yun Seon-do Garden on Bogildo Island Soswaewon in Damyang Myeongokheon in Damyang and Imdaejeong in Hwasun—offering visitors an immersive experience as if walking through these gardens. The exhibition is further enhanced by traditional music composed by Director Jang Young-gyu and sound effects like dawn mist and starry nights heightening the tranquil atmosphere and deepening the viewer’s immersion.

This exhibition is significant in that it uses precision measurement data previously limited to experts in fields like graphics and academic research to produce digital content that introduces the unique traditional Korean landscape to international visitors interested in Korean culture.

Furthermore the Cultural Heritage Administration plans to showcase the Byeolseo Garden media art at Seoul’s Ilmin Museum of Art (Jongno-gu Seoul) in early December. This exhibit will include media art featuring palace gardens and natural landscapes media mapping content that projects video onto objects by reinterpreting elements of traditional landscaping allowing the public to experience the beauty of Korean traditional gardens indirectly.

As the sole national agency responsible for the preservation management and utilization of traditional Korean gardens the Cultural Heritage Administration will continue its proactive efforts to promote the uniqueness and excellence of Korea’s traditional gardens through various opportunities.
