The National Wanju Cultural Heritage Research Institute (Director Lee Kyu-hoon) of the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage under the Cultural Heritage Administration will hold an international academic conference on the theme of “Ancient Embankments and Irrigation in East Asia” at 10 a.m. on October 17 at the Daejeon ICC Hotel (Yuseong-gu Daejeon).

Embankment: A structure built to store water or prevent river flooding or seawater intrusion.
Irrigation: The process of supplying water to fields and paddies for agricultural purposes.
The National Wanju Cultural Heritage Research Institute is conducting research on the restoration of ancient agricultural culture in the Jeollabuk-do region focusing on ancient embankment sites such as Byeokgolje in Gimje and Hwangdeungje in Iksan. Through this academic conference the institute aims to share the latest research findings from Korea and East Asia and to outline future research directions.

The conference will consist of a keynote speech two parts featuring seven presentations and a comprehensive discussion. The keynote speech titled “Current Status and Challenges in Research on Ancient Embankments in East Asia” will be delivered by Park Soon-bal (Chungnam National University). In the first part there will be four presentations:
▲ “An Introduction to Irrigation Systems through Ancient Embankments and Surrounding Sites in Jeollabuk-do” (Lee Ji-young National Wanju Cultural Heritage Research Institute)
▲ “Characteristics and Nature of Ancient Embankments in Jeollabuk-do” (Park Young-min Jeolla Cultural Heritage Research Institute)
▲ “Understanding and Applying Paleo-Topographic Environmental Analysis for Alluvial Research” (Ahn Hyung-ki Korea Institute of Archaeological Environment)
▲ “Hydrological and Topographic Considerations of Hwangdeungje” (Shin Hyung-seop ERI Solution & Jang Cheol-hee Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology). These presentations will explore the latest research on ancient embankments in the Jeollabuk-do region a key area for irrigation studies in ancient times.

In the second part three presentations will focus on research from other East Asian countries:
▲ “Discovery and Research on the Irrigation System Around Liangzhu Ancient City in China” (Wang Ningyuan Zhejiang Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology)
▲ “Ancient Embankments and Irrigation in Japan” (Koyamada Koichi Sayamaike Museum)
▲ “Dikes and Irrigation Systems of the Dong Son Culture in the Red River Delta Vietnam” (Bui Van Liem Vietnam Institute of Archaeology). These presentations will provide a comparative analysis of the characteristics of ancient embankments and irrigation systems across East Asia.

After the presentations a comprehensive discussion will take place led by Professor Seong Jeong-yong of Chungbuk National University where presenters and panelists will exchange various opinions.
