The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO Commissioner Kim Wan-gi) held a plaque unveiling ceremony for the Northern Gyeonggi Intellectual Property Center at 1:40 p.m. on October 16 (Wednesday) at Gyeonggi Daejin Technopark in Pocheon Gyeonggi Province.

The ceremony was held to announce the new leap forward of the Northern Gyeonggi Intellectual Property Center which was established this year to strengthen the region’s intellectual property competitiveness. The event was attended by KIPO Commissioner Kim Wan-gi National Assembly member Kim Yong-tae (Pocheon and Gapyeong) Gyeonggi Province Deputy Governor for Administrative Affairs Kim Seong-jung and Pocheon Mayor Baek Young-hyun. After the unveiling ceremony a roundtable discussion with local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) was held to listen to on-site feedback regarding intellectual property support measures.

Regional intellectual property centers are specialized support hubs established in key regions to provide residents and SMEs with close access to intellectual property consultations education domestic and international application support and IP management consulting.

Until last year there were three regional intellectual property centers in Gyeonggi Province located in Ansan Suwon and Bucheon focusing primarily on the southern Gyeonggi area. To address the disparity in intellectual property support between northern and southern Gyeonggi and to improve access to IP services for SMEs in northern Gyeonggi KIPO established the Northern Gyeonggi Intellectual Property Center earlier this year and has been working with Gyeonggi Province to promote IP support programs.

Currently there are a total of 28 regional intellectual property centers nationwide including the Northern Gyeonggi Intellectual Property Center. Companies that have received support from these centers have seen a 4.7% increase in sales and a 10.1% increase in exports (based on the 2023 IP-Based Overseas Expansion Support Program) demonstrating the clear impact of these services on enhancing the competitiveness of regional businesses and industries.

Commissioner Kim Wan-gi stated “We plan to operate the Northern Gyeonggi Intellectual Property Center as a leading support institution for local SMEs” and added “Through regional intellectual property centers we will provide comprehensive IP services tailored to each stage of business growth helping local SMEs grow steadily and become globally competitive small giants.”
