SAMSUNG was presented that they have applied for most numerous patent in the European Patent Office (EPO) among the whole world enterprise last year. According to EPO patent index in 2020 published on the 16th by EPO SAMSUNG has applied for total 3276 and surpassed Huawei the No. 1 enterprise in the previous year (2019) and retakes the No. 1 ranking by companies worldwide. SAMSUNG has published 14.6% increased patent than last year that they ranked 2nd. It is highest growth rate among the top 10 enterprise.
LG applied for 2909 patents ranked in third place the same as the previous year. Among the domestic companies POSCO (119) Hyundai Motors (112) and SK (93) were ranked after SAMSUNG and LG.
Nevertheless the pandemic of the COVID-19 infection (Corona 19) the number of patents applied to EPO in Korea last year was 9106 increased 9.2% from the previous year. This is the highest record and is the second highest growth rate among the top 10 countries in the EPO patent application country rankings.
In the case of U.S companies they filed 4.1% fewer patents compared to the previous year European and Japanese companies also diminished 1.3% and 1.1% respectively. Among the core countries China recorded a higher growth rate than Korea with an increase of 9.9% year-on-year.
Last year the total number of EPO patent applications worldwide decreased by 0.7% compared to the previous year showing an overall level similar to that of the previous year. The total number of patents filed with the EPO in 2020 was 180250 slightly lower than the 181532 in 2019.
The worlds most leading technology sectors are pharmaceuticals and biotechnology with growth of 10.2% and 6.3% respectively. However the number of patent applications in the transportation sector decreased by 5.5% compared to the last year showing the largest decline rate.
Patent applications of domestic companies were the biggest in the field of ‘Electronic devices appliances and energy which included many patents related to clean energy technology. Only in this sectors the growth rate seems 22.7%. Patent filings of computer technology sectors also raised by 9.2% showing the highest growth rate by comparison with other core countries.
EPO Chairman Antonio Campinos mentioned Korean corporations have continuously innovated even in difficult environments and it has been a core growth power about the number of EPO patent in 2020.
