New Rice Variety Golden Queen No. 3 Selected for Presidential Award at the 20th Korea Outstanding Variety Awards 2024
A total of 8 awards selected including 1 Presidential Award 2 Prime Minister Awards and 5 Minister Awards with a total prize of 140 million KRW
The Korea Seed & Variety Service (Acting Director Baek Woon-hwal) announced that at the 20th Korea Outstanding Variety Awards 2024 the rice variety Golden Queen No. 3 from Seedpia Co. Ltd. was selected for the Presidential Award. Additionally the hot pepper variety NW Golden and the cabbage variety Winter Kingdom from Nongwoo Bio Co. Ltd. received the Prime Minister Awards while the Minister of Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs Award went to five varieties including the poinsettia variety Flame from the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science totaling 8 selected varieties.
This year 40 varieties across six categories including vegetables fruit trees ornamental plants and export crops were evaluated by a panel of external experts. The evaluation focused on marketability technological improvements quality completion and export potential. After reviewing contributions to the seed industry breeding difficulty and consumer preferences the final 8 varieties were selected.
The rice variety Golden Queen No. 3 which won the Presidential Award was highly praised for being the first aromatic rice variety developed by a private company and successfully commercialized. The cabbage variety Winter Kingdom awarded the Prime Minister Award holds 66% of the market share for early maturing winter cabbages and is well-regarded by farmers and distributors. In the export category the hot pepper variety NW Golden was recognized as a leading export variety holding a 35% market share in the Dominican Republic’s pepper market.
The awards ceremony will be held on October 16 in conjunction with the opening ceremony of the International Seed Expo in Gimje Jeollabuk-do. The prize money will be 50 million KRW for the Presidential Award 30 million KRW for each Prime Minister Award and 10 million KRW for each Minister Award (5 million KRW for varieties developed by public officials).
Kang Seung-gyu Director of the Seed Industry Support Division at the Korea Seed & Variety Service stated “Since 2005 the Korea Outstanding Variety Awards have recognized 149 varieties through 2023. We will continue to promote award-winning varieties at international exhibitions to boost exports and will actively discover and foster excellent new varieties to expand breeding diversity and exports.
