The Rural Development Administration (RDA Commissioner Kwon Jae-han) held a demonstration on October 22 in the paddy fields of Juksan-myeon Gimje Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province showcasing the machine harvest of ‘Seonyu 2’ a soybean variety planted densely for double cropping.

About 40 local soybean farmers from the Gimje region attended the event evaluating the yield and adaptability of the dense planting method for ‘Seonyu 2’ with machine harvesting.

‘Seonyu 2’ is a short-growth cycle soybean variety suitable for double cropping with winter crops like wheat barley and onions. Large-scale paddy field soybean farms can stagger the flowering period by adjusting planting times reducing the risk of damage from wind and rain.

The RDA developed and introduced a dense planting technique for ‘Seonyu 2’ in which soybeans are planted 1.5 times more densely than conventional methods. This approach increases the height at which the pods form and boosts yield.

In fact the ‘Seonyu 2’ soybeans planted 1.5 times more densely than usual on June 19 were harvested this time with pods positioned 3 cm higher* enabling smooth machine harvesting.
*Pod height comparison in local fields (cm): (Dense planting) 16 cm vs. (Conventional planting) 13 cm.

Additionally the RDA is collaborating with agricultural organizations to ensure the stable application of research results in the field and to further refine new technologies. The Juksan Soybean Farming Association one of the partner research farms is working with the RDA to implement stable production techniques for paddy-grown ‘Seonyu 2’ soybeans.

Jung Byung-woo head of the Southern Crops Division at the RDA remarked “‘Seonyu 2’ is an excellent double-cropping soybean variety with strong resistance to pod shattering large seeds and high yield. When planted more densely in paddy fields than conventional methods farmers can expect stable cultivation and increased yields. We will continue to focus on field research and collaboration with partner farms to ensure that newly developed technologies are rapidly disseminated to the field.”
