Innovative Ideas for the Future of Insects as Feed Gathered in One Place
The 1st Feed Insect Technology Sharing Competition Held at the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences on the 25th
The Rural Development Administration (RDA) under the leadership of Director Kwon Jae-han together with the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences will host the inaugural Feed Insect Technology Sharing Competition on October 25. This event aims to raise awareness of the value of insects as feed and invigorate the related industry.
This competition organized by the Korea Feed Insect Association and supported by the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences will see participation from domestic feed insect agribusinesses prospective entrepreneurs and interested university students.
Participants will present and share ideas focusing on three key areas: insect breeding technologies insect processing technologies and ideas for boosting the insect industry. Winners will be awarded the Director’s Prize from the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences (3 recipients) the President’s Prize from the Korea Feed Insect Association (2 recipients) and prize money.
The designation of the black soldier fly as livestock under the Livestock Act enforcement decree in September of last year has sparked renewed interest in the feed insect industry. The domestic feed insect market holds a significant portion of the broader insect industry. In fact the sales of black soldier fly products have doubled over the past five years.
Sales of primary industrial insect products in 2023 reached 47.319 billion KRW with black soldier fly products accounting for 11.589 billion KRW approximately 25% of the total.
Sales of black soldier fly products: from 5.988 billion KRW in 2019 to 11.589 billion KRW in 2023 (approximately doubling).
As a result fostering technology exchange among agribusinesses advancing insect production and processing and discovering excellent technologies to accelerate industrial growth have emerged as critical tasks for the development of the insect industry.
Im Byeong-gu President of the Korea Feed Insect Association stated “This event serves as a meaningful platform to share the advanced technologies possessed by outstanding agribusinesses and to elevate domestic feed insect-related technologies to the next level. I hope that this will lead to the further expansion of the feed insect market.”

We will continue to focus on research and development as well as support ensuring that the feed insect industry becomes more competitive both domestically and internationally.”
