Young Imagination Meets Traditional Architecture at Deoksugung Palace

The Korean National University of Cultural Heritage (KNUCH) under the direction of President Kang Kyung-hwan will hold the 21st Traditional Architecture Exhibition from October 29 to November 3 at the Special Exhibition Room on the first floor of Deoksugung Palace’s Dondeokjeon (Jung-gu Seoul).

This exhibition will showcase 23 works by graduates and graduating students from the Department of Traditional Architecture including their research papers and architectural designs as well as restoration designs of Gyeongungung (Deoksugung) by third-year students.

The exhibition will highlight the value of traditional architecture through various research papers on topics like the proportions between structural members joint forms and connections as well as designs that blend tradition and modernity and projects that explore the use of modern cultural heritage.

Joint forms: The ways different structural members are joined or fitted together.
Additionally on October 28 at 1:00 PM KNUCH will sign an MOU with the Korean Institute of Architects (KIA) represented by President Han Young-geun for academic exchange and cooperation in the fields of traditional architecture and architectural studies. The signing ceremony will take place at Dondeokjeon Deoksugung Palace.

The event will be attended by KNUCH President Kang Kyung-hwan KIA President Han Young-geun faculty members from the Department of Traditional Architecture and future KIA executive members. With this agreement both institutions plan to actively promote cooperation including ▲ academic and personnel exchanges such as appointing KIA experts as lecturers at KNUCH and ▲ linking internships and employment opportunities for KNUCH students at KIA member firms all aimed at fostering professional talent in the traditional architecture field.

Meanwhile KNUCH is aiming for accreditation in architectural education by 2026. The university is creating a high-level educational environment that integrates both traditional and modern architecture establishing itself as a hub for nurturing talent in traditional architecture.

Architectural Education Accreditation: A system provided by the Korea Architectural Accrediting Board (KAAB) which allows accredited schools to offer specialized architectural curricula and students who complete such programs can obtain qualifications for becoming licensed architects.
The Korean National University of Cultural Heritage will continue its proactive efforts in fostering professional talent for the protection and utilization of national heritage through various collaborations with institutions while also promoting the dissemination and appreciation of traditional culture and its values.
