The Korea National Arboretum under the Korea Forest Service (Director: Lim Young-seok) has designated a total of 20 arboretums including the Chollipo Arboretum (Director: Kim Kun-ho) as “National Conservation Institutions for Rare and Endemic Plants.” This initiative is part of a policy aimed at ensuring the stable conservation and propagation of Korea’s rare and endemic plants.

The Chollipo Arboretum located in Taean County Chungcheongnam-do is the first arboretum to be designated in this network. It conserves 168 plant species off-site including 139 rare species (such as Tricyrtis macropoda) and 69 endemic species (such as Hemerocallis taeanensis). The designated conservation institutions are entrusted with the systematic collection propagation and preservation of genetic resources for rare and endemic plants as specified by Presidential Decree with the goal of protecting biodiversity of national significance.

The Korea Forest Service is providing necessary resources to these designated arboretums to support their conservation efforts. Additionally it plans to expand the designation of conservation institutions through continuous management and assessment of each facility contributing to the systematic propagation and management of national biological resources as part of climate crisis response efforts.

Lim Young-seok Director of the Korea National Arboretum stated “Through this designation we will stabilize the conservation of Korea’s unique rare and endemic plants. We also plan to expand central-local plant governance to revitalize local economies based on endemic plant resources supported by ongoing assistance and cooperation.”
