2024 Marine Environmental Monitoring Network Data Utilization Paper Contest Award Ceremony Held

Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries Uncovers Outstanding Research Cases to Expand Marine Environmental Research and Inform Policy

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (Minister Kang Do-hyung) announced that it will hold the award ceremony for the 2024 Marine Environmental Monitoring Network Data Utilization Paper Contest on Friday November 15 at the Korean Society for Marine Environment and Energy’s fall academic conference.

This paper contest was organized to promote research using data accumulated in the Marine Environmental Monitoring Network* since 1980 and to explore diverse utilization methods.
*The monitoring network conducts regular annual surveys on the status and changes of marine environments including seawater seabed sediments and marine organisms.

A total of four award-winning papers were selected after expert evaluation. The top honor went to Seong-sik Park from Pukyong National University for his study Changes in Sewage Systems and the Resulting Increase in COD Concentration in Environmental Management Areas. This research was highly regarded for its analysis of the correlation between the increase in road runoff due to changes in sewage systems and the rise in COD levels in marine areas specifically identifying causes of environmental pollution.

The excellence awards were given to two papers: Estimation of Metal Leaching from Antifouling Paints on Vessels in Trade Ports by Jong-kyu Park from Geo System Research Co. Ltd. and Spatiotemporal Variability of Dissolved Inorganic Nutrients in Korean Coastal Waters from 2011-2020 by Jun-young Lee from Pusan National University.

Recipients of the grand prize excellence award and encouragement award will each receive certificates from the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries the President of the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation and the President of the Korean Society for Marine Environment and Energy respectively along with monetary prizes. The awarded research results will be published in the Korean Journal of Marine Environment and Energy.

Minister Kang Do-hyung expressed his gratitude to researchers for their interest in the contest which was held to explore diverse interpretations and applications of the data produced by the monitoring network. He added We will continue to work to ensure that relevant data can be utilized in marine environmental management policies in the future.
