Youth Trainees from National Arts Organizations Showcase Their Growth at Arts Festival Week
Youth Trainee Joint Performance to Be Held from November 16 to 24 at Myeongdong Arts Theater and the Seoul Arts Center
The Ministry of Culture Sports and Tourism (MCST) will host the Youth Trainee Arts Festival Week from November 16 (Sat) to November 24 (Sun) at the Myeongdong Arts Theater and the Seoul Arts Center featuring performances by youth trainees from national arts organizations. Minister Yoo In-chon plans to visit the performance venues of the National Theater and others to encourage the young trainees.
The National Arts Organizations Youth Training Program provides young performing artists with practical training and opportunities to experience Korea’s top national stages aiming to nurture the next generation of K-culture leaders. In April 329 youth trainees were selected from a highly competitive pool (9.5:1) to join nine national arts organizations across classical music theater dance and traditional arts. These “First Cohort Unified Trainees” received professional training from national organization members and industry experts participating as leads or supporting roles in regular and regional performances by the national groups.
Highlights of Youth Trainee Achievements Across the National Theater National Symphony Orchestra National Chorus National Ballet and National Contemporary Dance Company
“Arts Festival Week” will showcase the efforts of these young artists across theater classical music dance and other genres. The festival will kick off on November 16 and 17 with the National Theaters youth trainees performing Jojo at Myeongdong Arts Theater a Korean debut of Michael Ende’s work featuring all 40 youth trainees from the National Theater.
On November 18 the National Symphony Orchestra and National Chorus will hold a joint performance titled An Autumn Night Poetry and Romance at Myeongdong Arts Theater. The first part will feature Mozart’s “Flute Quartet” among other classical pieces while the second part will include Brahms choral works and popular Korean songs. In the third part 34 youth trainees will perform Jake Runestad’s The Hope of Loving.
On November 19 the National Ballet will take the stage with Trainee Gala Concert where 15 youth trainees will perform new choreography by choreographers Lee Young-chul Song Jung-bin and Kang Hyo-hyung as well as classic pieces like Don Quixote. On November 23 and 24 the National Contemporary Dance Company will present Blue Light at the Jayu Small Theater at the Seoul Arts Center featuring 18 youth trainees interpreting four new works by choreographers Kwon Hyuk Lim Sun-young Mariko Kakizaki and Megan Doheny & Ilia Nikurov.
The “Arts Festival Week” aims to be a celebration not only for young artists but also for all youth who love culture. MCST’s 2030 Youth Advisory Group and youth interns will join as audience members to further elevate the festival’s atmosphere.
Youth Trainee Performances to Continue Through December Including Traditional Arts and Musicals
Following the “Arts Festival Week” additional performances by youth trainees will continue into December including the National Gugak Center’s Youth Trainee Completion Showcase on December 24 and the Seoul Performing Arts Companys musical 2024 Year-End Gala SPACon on December 28.
All performances by the National Theater National Symphony Orchestra and Chorus National Ballet and National Gugak Center are free. For performances by the National Contemporary Dance Company (Blue Light) and the Seoul Performing Arts Company (2024 Year-End Gala SPACon) a special 30% “N-Cha Repeat Viewer Discount” will be offered to audience members who attended other trainee showcase performances.
Minister Yoo In-chon stated “Next year we will significantly expand the youth trainee support program so that more young artists can experience national stages explore their potential and grow.”
