KIPO Signs MOU with Three New “IP-Focused Universities” on November 13
The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO Commissioner Kim Wan-gi) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on November 13 at 2:10 PM at the Korea Intellectual Property Center (Gangnam-gu Seoul) with three newly selected universities* designated as IP-Focused Universities to collaborate on developing intellectual property talent.

Through this agreement KIPO and the three universities have committed to establishing IP degree programs tailored to regional key industries and training IP professionals to drive the growth of local innovation companies.
KIPO has been selecting IP-focused universities to serve as regional intellectual property education hubs since 2021. This year Pusan National University (Busan region) Chonbuk National University (North Jeolla region) and Jeju National University (Jeju region) were added expanding IP education hubs to nine regions nationwide.
Project Overview: To cultivate IP experts in national strategic technologies and regional industries regional universities are designated as IP-focused universities to provide IP degree programs faculty training and IP education content development.
Designation Status: (2021) Gyeongsang National University Chonnam National University Chungbuk National University → (2022) Chungnam National University → (2023) Kyungpook National University Kangwon National University → (2024) Pusan National University Chonbuk National University Jeju National University
Each university will establish IP convergence majors aligned with local industries: Pusan National University in precision machinery and healthcare Chonbuk National University in bio-agriculture AI/semiconductors and energy and Jeju National University in intelligent tourism services and clean bio-industries advancing the development of IP talent in their respective regions.
In addition these universities will develop region-specific IP content and offer various extracurricular IP competency-building programs. They will also collaborate with local universities companies public institutions and high schools to expand IP education focused on creation protection and utilization.
KIPO Commissioner Kim Wan-gi stated “We expect IP-focused universities to continue playing a key role as regional IP education hubs through ongoing collaboration between KIPO and universities” and added “KIPO will remain committed to supporting the cultivation of IP convergence talent who will lead regional balanced development and future industries.”
