Breaking away from conventional formalities the G-Artience 2024 Connecting Week redefined the essence of international events. With no VIP seats formal introductions or ceremonial speeches the event focused solely on showcasing innovation and fusion.

Held from December 1 to 3 at the Daejeon Convention Center and WIP Square this international event aimed to merge science technology and cultural arts. Co-hosted by KAIST the Nam June Paik Art Center and the Daejeon Tourism Organization the event sought to position itself as a global hub for TechArt through creative innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration.

More than just a celebration G-Artience 2024 served as a starting point for designing the future through the convergence of science and art. This event has drawn global attention marking a significant step toward establishing South Korea as a leader in TechArt innovation.

K-Pop’s Expansion Through Technology

As the global popularity of K-Pop continues to rise the success of BLACKPINK’s Rosé whose rendition of Apartment garnered 420 million YouTube views as of November 25 highlights its worldwide appeal. Dr. Il-Kwon Jung head of the Content Research Division at the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) emphasized the need to “digitalize K-Pop through technology to ensure sustainable growth.”

“While offline concerts are limited to audiences of around 50000 our virtual concert technology can bring together millions of fans from around the world simultaneously” Dr. Jung explained. As a government-funded research institute ETRI focuses on developing future-oriented technologies to meet national needs. “We don’t produce movies but we create technologies that make filmmaking faster and more efficient” he added highlighting the institute’s unique role.

Looking Ahead: Technology Research and Cultural Fusion

The ETRI Content Research Division the largest of its kind in South Korea comprises 130 Ph.D. and master’s level researchers and plays a critical role for both the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Culture Sports and Tourism. Rather than focusing on immediate needs the division develops technologies anticipated to be essential 3 to 10 years from now.

Dr. Jung noted “It’s challenging to develop every technology simultaneously but when the time comes we’ll be ready.” He forecasted a transformative era in content creation where AI automates storyboarding and scriptwriting. However he acknowledged a gap in research on storytelling and scenario development expressing a desire for further advancements in this area.

Proposals for Collaboration at G-Artience 2024

Dr. Jung emphasized that for G-Artience 2024 Connecting Week to succeed collaboration with the government is essential. “A private-sector consortium should be established to engage with the government in meaningful discussions and produce actionable outcomes” he stated.

He also advocated for a platform where cultural and artistic figures like JYP Entertainment’s Jinyoung Park and YG Entertainment’s Hyun-Suk Yang could collaborate with technology experts and policymakers.

During G-Artience 2024 Dr. Jung’s research team will showcase innovations utilizing generative AI and spatial computing technologies. These developments aim to digitalize cultural content like K-Pop enabling global connectivity and unlocking new possibilities for engagement.

“Breaking Boundaries: Science Technology and Culture”

Under the theme of merging science technology and cultural arts G-Artience 2024 broke free from traditional norms to explore new frontiers. From the symphonic opening on a 75-meter LED screen to vision lectures and creative stages the event showcased the extraordinary synergy of science and art.

Highlights included AI avatar dances virtual idol EDM performances and collaborative TechArt projects by experts from 13 countries. These achievements underscored South Korea’s leadership in TechArt and its ambitious journey toward becoming a global hub in this revolutionary field.
