A Dialogue Between Science and Art: The Power to Enrich Society
G-Artience 2024: Opening New Possibilities Through the Fusion of Science and Art Dr. Kwang-Ryun Won Presents a Vision of Talent Development and Integration for the Future
“A Stage for Disruptive Innovation” - G-Artience 2024 Connecting Week
The G-Artience 2024 Connecting Week has redefined the concept of an international event breaking away from traditional formalities. No VIP seats no formal introductions no ceremonial speeches—just a stage that celebrates innovation and integration.
Held from December 1 to 3 at the Daejeon Convention Center and WIP Square this global event aims to merge science technology and cultural arts. Co-hosted by KAIST the Nam June Paik Art Center and the Daejeon Tourism Organization G-Artience 2024 aspires to become a global hub for TechArt promoting creativity and collaboration.
Far from being just a festival the event is positioned as a starting point for designing the future through the convergence of science and art. Amid growing international attention G-Artience 2024 is set to establish South Korea as a leader in the TechArt domain.
“When science and art engage in dialogue they balance the extremes of technocentrism and humanities enriching society as a whole” said Dr. Kwang-Ryun Won Professor Emeritus at KAIST and a pioneer in integrating science technology and the arts.
As the first vision speaker at G-Artience 2024 Dr. Won will share his insights on the positive societal impacts of this convergence. With a background in applied physics and computer science he was instrumental in founding KAIST’s Graduate School of Culture Technology and introducing the concept of “Culture Technology.” Having served as Chair of the National Research Council of Science & Technology (NST) Dr. Won continues to explore the intersections of science and art.
The Fusion of Art and Technology
Dr. Won described the meeting of science and art as more than mutual utilization; it is a “preventive and constructive act that creates a world of beauty.” While science prioritizes reproducibility art values originality. “Art cannot exist without technology but technology alone cannot create new artistic value” he explained emphasizing the potential born from their intersection.
He highlighted South Korea’s potential in fields like media art stating “Media art offers countless opportunities to pioneer new forms of expression by merging art and technology.” However he also pointed out the lack of infrastructure for talent development and research support advocating for the establishment of a Korean Institute for Culture Technology.
Developing Talent and the Role of Government
Dr. Won praised the creation of KAIST’s Graduate School of Culture Technology and the contributions of the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) to advancing games and films. Yet he warned against complacency stressing the need for ongoing efforts to cultivate talent and establish organizations to support both research and creation.
“We must strengthen talent development and create an environment where research and creative work can flourish together” he stated. He underscored the shared challenges of pure science and art: neither generates immediate financial returns nor lends itself to quantifiable outcomes. Despite these limitations Dr. Won encouraged finding new avenues for societal contributions.
A Vision for G-Artience 2024
Regarding G-Artience 2024 Dr. Won expressed optimism about the event’s potential. “This event has immense potential” he said adding that it offers a concrete opportunity to explore the positive impacts of science and art integration on society and culture.
“Breaking conventions under the theme of integrating science technology and cultural arts this event sets the stage for a revolutionary leap toward establishing K-TechArt as a global hub.”
The event’s highlights include a symphonic opening on a 75-meter LED screen vision lectures and creative performances. Attendees will witness the convergence of science and art featuring AI avatar dances virtual idol EDM performances and collaborative projects by experts from 13 countries. These elements underscore South Korea’s bold strides in leading the global TechArt revolution.
