G-Artians: Opening an Era of Dreams Through the Convergence of Science and Art
“A Stage of Convergence the First Step Toward the Future” – Interview with Professor Emeritus Myungseok Kim of KAIST G-Artians 2024: Presenting New Possibilities Through the Harmony of Science and Art
Professor Emeritus Myungseok Kim of KAIST who served as the organizing committee chairman for G-Artians 2024 Connecting Week showcased a new paradigm where science and technology meet art through this event. Recognized as a pivotal figure in the advancement of Korea’s cultural technology Professor Kim led yet another meaningful challenge following the establishment of the KAIST Department of Industrial Design.
Throughout the preparation and execution of the event Professor Kim played a central role. By inviting the right talent for the right roles he created an environment where everyone could harmoniously collaborate highlighting his exceptional leadership.
“The Convergence of Science and Art Enriches Human Life”
When asked about the significance of the event Professor Kim responded:
I believe the greatest significance lies in the celebration that science and technology together with art create. As we have passed through an industrialized society we have become accustomed to materialistic values. However it is precisely at times like these that the meeting of art and science can generate new sentiments and contribute to enriching human life. That is the direction we must pursue.
“A Dialogue Toward the Future and a Bridge Between Generations”
Regarding the stage production during the event he expressed both satisfaction and a hint of regret:
It was refreshing to see the boundaries between the stage and the audience eliminated allowing the audience to enjoy lectures and performances from every angle with a 360-degree setup. In particular I consider it a great achievement to have established a space where speakers and listeners could communicate through the use of large screens. However the aspect where one-on-one focus between the speakers and the audience was lacking remains an area for improvement in the future.
He also shared his deep impression regarding the session lineup of the event:
The performance by violist Cha In-hong in the first session was deeply moving. The technology-art performance also provided the audience with a refreshing stimulus. I was especially impressed by the third session where next-generation presenters showcased such original ideas that they surprised the older generation.
“G-Artians: A Stepping Stone Toward an Era of Dreams”
Professor Kim explained the potential impact of the convergence of science and art on society:
We are transitioning from an information society to a dream society. Imagining the future and opening up new possibilities is precisely why science and technology must collaborate with art. I hope that G-Artians will serve as a pivotal platform to realize even greater dreams in this journey.
In conclusion he emphasized the sustainability of G-Artians:
The efforts demonstrated by everyone in preparing this event were truly remarkable. I hope that G-Artians will not be a one-off event but will continue to grow over the next 10 20 years into a platform recognized by the world. I wish for this positive influence to spread widely and help create a better future.
Professor Kim’s interview provided profound insights into the present and future of the convergence between science technology and art outlining the direction in which G-Artians should move forward.
