After her tenure as a member of the Daejeon Municipal Dance Company dancer Kim Won-kyung transitioned to a freelance career leading her own dance troupe. At G-Artians 2024 Connecting Week she embraced a unique challenge by taking the stage alongside a robot developed by Professor Oh Jun-ho’s research team at KAIST. During the stage preparations Director Kim personally taught the robot dance moves and synchronized their actions significantly enhancing the overall performance.

Reflecting on the experience she remarked “Before encountering G-Artians everything was so different” and expressed her anticipation for regular interactions with scientists and technologists.

Recalling her collaboration with Professor Oh’s research team she shared:

“When I first received the proposal I thought the robot would simply mimic my movements. However once I visited the lab I discovered that I was actually controlling the robot’s hand and teaching it dance moves. I realized that it required a level of precision akin to puppetry. The more delicately I moved the more precisely the robot responded. It was a very special experience albeit brief.”

She is optimistic that this experience will open new horizons for the future of Korean dance. “I believe that robots can play a crucial role in popularizing the charm of traditional Korean dance. Especially if a robot performs group choreography it could bring immense delight to the audience.”

Addressing the question of whether robots could replace art she stated clearly:

“While robots might be able to replicate the technical aspects I dont think they can ever express the soul and energy of dance. However if robots help open the door to art it could create opportunities for humans to add even greater depth of emotion.”

She also emphasized that collaborations with technologists can pave new breakthroughs in the arts. “G-Artians has opened a stage for the fusion of art and science. I believe that when scientists’ ideas meet the creativity of artists the results can exceed our wildest imaginations.”

Reflecting on the transformative impact G-Artians has had on her she said:

“Previously my focus was solely on learning teaching and performing Korean dance. But through G-Artians I saw the possibility for science and technology to give our art wings. I now have hope that collaborating with these fields will allow us to reach a broader audience. I’m excited about the endless possibilities that such fusion could create in the future.”

Dancer Kim Won-kyung emphasized that the fusion of science and art not only paves a new path for the arts but also offers an opportunity to inspire and move a greater number of people.
