Professor Lee Sung-hee has led KAIST to embrace science students and spearhead the convergence of science technology and cultural arts. One of the results of this pioneering approach is the Graduate School of Cultural Technology which has become a cradle for creative education and research. As the head of the department at the Graduate School of Cultural Technology Professor Lee attracted significant attention during the “Future Dialogue” session at G-Artians 2024 Connecting Week where he discussed the present state and future of cultural technology.

Reflecting on the significance of the event Professor Lee stated:

“In the past there were many attempts to merge science and art under government initiatives but what was refreshing about G-Artians is that it was driven by the private sector. It was very impressive to see everyone come together to prepare an event in a field that isn’t typically profitable.”

He also expressed positive impressions regarding the stage and event structure:

“The departure from the traditional stage format toward one that emphasizes communication and equality was outstanding. Moreover the event’s structure which featured a diverse lineup of speakers provided an excellent opportunity for networking among representatives from industry academia government and cultural sectors.”

Professor Lee emphasized the educational value of G-Artians and highlighted the potential for expanding the tech-art field:

“As this event grows the agenda of merging cultural arts with science and technology will reach a broader audience. In particular it will instill in students the notion that this field is a promising industry for the future and may also encourage artists to begin integrating technology into their work.”

Discussing the future growth of G-Artians as a global platform he suggested:

“Although the event made efforts toward internationalization it still had a predominantly Korean focus. By expanding into a hybrid format using digital spaces like the metaverse it could attract even more participation.”

He further expressed optimism about G-Artians’ potential to establish itself as a global representative event in cultural arts and technology:

“Unlike forums such as Davos where political and economic leaders compete the fusion of cultural arts and technology faces little competition. If G-Artians continues its dedicated efforts it can secure a unique leading position.”

Finally Professor Lee noted the special value of hosting the event in Daejeon:

“Many might have expected such an event to be held in Seoul. However G-Artians taking place in Daejeon—a city renowned for its scientific legacy—and bringing together related figures from across the nation in collaboration with the region is profoundly meaningful. This has also provided an opportunity for KAIST and the Graduate School of Cultural Technology to achieve greater synergy through collaboration.”

As Professor Lee highlighted G-Artians is opening new possibilities through the convergence of science and art charting an expansive vision centered in Daejeon.

G-Artians 2024: Soaring as a Global Hub for Tech-Art

The event offered a unique stage to showcase the fusion of science technology and cultural arts. Co-hosted by KAIST the Paik Nam June Art Center and the Daejeon Tourism Organization it was designed with the goal of evolving into a global hub for tech-art through creative innovation.

The interview took place on the second day of the event December 2 in the press room at the Daejeon Convention Center where various domestic and international speakers and stakeholders gathered to engage in in-depth discussions about the significance and achievements of the event.
