Dr. Jeong Il-kwon Director of the Content Research Division at the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) shared deep insights into the convergence of technology and art at G-Artians 2024 Connecting Week. Although he does not directly produce cultural art content his role is pivotal in developing technologies that widely disseminate such content placing him at the heart of fusion efforts.

Regarding the event Dr. Jeong stated

“I was very pleased to see an event themed around the meeting of technology and art.”
He emphasized the importance of fusion technology and expressed his willingness to serve as a catalyst—helping scientists and artists understand each other’s languages.

Dr. Jeong attributed special meaning to G-Artians as the first large-scale event of its kind and stressed

“We must make this event sustainable.”
He added that the collaboration of government agencies—such as the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Culture Sports and Tourism—is essential for enhancing the event’s outcomes.

When asked about the event’s role as a socio-cultural stimulus he remarked

“The event itself is already stimulating”
but also suggested that it should evolve into a festival or celebration to attract even broader participation. He noted that using exhibition halls and technology booths to involve various institutions and artists would be highly effective.

Reflecting on the challenges he faced in preparing his presentation Dr. Jeong shared

“In the beginning preparing for the presentation was the most difficult part. However as the event is held repeatedly there will come a day when people understand it without needing an explanation.”

He underscored that sustainability is key to G-Artians’ evolution into a global platform proposing

“We should expand global participation and even consider hosting the event overseas.”

To foster growth in the cultural content industry Dr. Jeong emphasized

“We must continuously facilitate connections between technology and art.”
Recalling past experiences he noted “If interactions don’t help both sides they cannot be sustained” and vowed to work proactively to overcome such challenges.

Discussing the difficulties in developing fusion technologies he pointed out

“It is often the case that engineers and artists do not understand each other’s languages.”
However he expressed hope that ETRI can serve as a catalyst for such communication and committed to playing an active role in the future.

To encourage the convergence of technology and art Dr. Jeong proposed organizing a tech-art contest for the public and students. He explained

“A contest can serve as a pathway for emerging artists”
and stressed that the government should support this initiative through policy.

Dr. Jeong concluded with conviction that although the journey of merging technology and art is challenging sustained effort can bring about positive change.

“Our institute is always ready to participate if opportunities like these arise. I look forward to a future created by the combined efforts of technology and art.”
