At the opening stage of G-Artians 2024 Connecting Week pianist Hayami Satoko performed alongside violinist Professor Cha In-hong. However their collaboration deviated from traditional duet formats. Hayami played on a piano installed against the wall of the stage while Professor Cha performed at the center of the stage. Despite being separated by several tens of meters this physical distance became an integral element of their innovative approach amplifying the musical impact.

Reflecting on the experience Hayami described the performance as “an extraordinarily special experience.”

“When I first encountered this event I was immediately intrigued by how different it was from anything I had seen before. I was excited to discover what new forms the fusion of technology and art might reveal.”

Hayami acknowledged that the physical separation between her and Professor Cha posed a unique challenge for the duet.

“The physical distance between Professor Cha and me had a distinct effect on our performance. Due to the delay in the transmission of sound between us I had to slow down my reactions and patiently wait for the music. This was a challenge I had never encountered before but it also provided an opportunity to uncover something new in musical expression.”

She was also deeply impressed by the live visual presentation that accompanied the performance.

“While the music flowed a real-time visual presentation was created delivering an unpredictable and engaging spectacle to the audience. I saw the fusion of science and technology as having the potential to provide a uniquely moving experience.”

Regarding the convergence of science and art Hayami expressed a positive outlook.

“There have been many instances of science and art merging throughout history but the kind of fusion we’re talking about today offers possibilities on an entirely different level. I hope to see this trend extend beyond music to other fields as well.”

Through this experience Hayami Satoko discovered a new method of conveying artistic emotion that transcends physical limitations. In her words the meeting of technology and art holds boundless potential—a vision she hopes will be realized on many more stages in the future.
