“From Music to Software Crossing the Boundaries of Creation” – Researcher Lee Kwan-gyu’s G-Artians Story
“Synesthesia and XR Content Opening New Horizons for Creation” “Collaboration with Robots Expanding Creative Possibilities”
Researcher Lee Kwan-gyu is a fusion artist with a unique career that began in music and expanded into software. He gained attention at G-Artians 2024 Connecting Week by presenting a work that combined computer music and media art.
His piece centered on music visual art and XR (extended reality) content offered the audience a fresh sensory experience. After his presentation Lee recalled his participation in the NextGen Ten Talk saying “I was surprised by how much better the event was than I had expected.”
From Art to Technology: A Journey of Fusion
Lee began his academic journey majoring in practical music composition before transitioning to computer music during his master’s program.
“While music can be insular and conservative computer culture is open and offers many new learning opportunities. Based on this experience I aimed to create software that artists can easily use.”
He developed an app for creating XR content entirely on his own over the course of six months.
“This app is designed to maximize performance in a mixed reality (MR) environment. It processes video on a computer while the headset only receives data thereby enhancing graphic quality. I have made it available on the App Store so that anyone can use it.”
Collaboration with Robots: New Possibilities
During the event Lee identified KAIST Professor Oh Jun-ho as the person he most wishes to collaborate with.
“I expect that the dancing robot presented by Professor Oh will greatly expand my creative horizons. By incorporating robots into computer music performances I believe we can achieve even more exciting results.”
He has previously showcased performances in which a dancer’s movements generated sound and visuals.
“I believe that linking this experience to physical robots could greatly broaden the scope of creative expression. I would like to further develop this idea through collaboration.”
The Role and Expectations for G-Artians
Lee stated that G-Artians holds tremendous potential as a platform where art and technology converge.
“There aren’t many opportunities for artists and engineers to meet and such encounters are incredibly beneficial for creative work. Although the 10-minute presentation format initially felt short I believe it is sufficient for concisely showcasing one’s work.”
He added expressing his hope that G-Artians will help creators share their work more widely and expand opportunities for collaboration:
“If the works presented are archived on the website and made easily accessible to others it will be a tremendous asset.”
Through his work that bridges technology and art Researcher Lee Kwan-gyu has demonstrated the importance of fusion thinking. In his words he hopes that G-Artians will continue to inspire creators and grow into a central platform for fusion art.
G-Artians 2024: Soaring as a Global Hub for Tech-Art
G-Artians 2024 Connecting Week was an international event held from December 1 to 3 2024 at the Daejeon Convention Center and WIP Square. The event offered a unique stage to showcase the fusion of science technology and cultural arts. Co-hosted by KAIST the Paik Nam June Art Center and the Daejeon Tourism Organization it was designed with the goal of evolving into a global hub for tech-art through creative innovation.
The interview took place on the second day of the event December 2 in the press room at the Daejeon Convention Center where various domestic and international speakers and stakeholders gathered to engage in in-depth discussions about the significance and achievements of the event.
Beyond mere fusion the event demonstrated a strong commitment to exploring new possibilities at the intersection of science technology and art with the aim of positively impacting future industries and society.
