“Artist Yoon Dae-won: Juxtaposing Human Touch with AI Sensations”
“Transforming Touch into Poetic Language Poetry into Images… An Experiment in Communication Between Humans and AI” Exploring the Body and Sensations in the Digital Age at G-Artians
Art major Yoon Dae-won has garnered attention for his experimental work that compares human tactile sensations with analyses generated by artificial intelligence (AI). At G-Artians 2024 Connecting Week he presented a piece entitled Tactile Transmission which translates physical contact into poetic language and then visualizes it as images interpreted by AI.
The Gap Between Humans and AI: Tactile Transmission
Discussing the performance Yoon explained:
“When one dancer touches another’s body the dancer who feels that touch expresses it in poetic language. For instance the warmth felt when someone grabs a shoulder might be described as ‘like the soybean paste soup my mother made in winter.’ When this sentence is fed into an AI the intuitive context familiar to humans disappears and the AI converts it into an image. Through this process the work juxtaposes the sensory differences between humans and AI.”
Through Tactile Transmission Yoon raises questions about how artificial intelligence and the digital media environment are reshaping our senses and bodies.
Finding the Path of Art in a Fusion Era
In recent years fusion projects incorporating AI virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) have been on the rise in the cultural and artistic sectors. Yoon observes “The collaboration between technology and art is becoming increasingly complex far beyond mere fusion. It can be overwhelming to try to keep pace on one’s own but through collaboration and consultation we are able to broaden the realm of possibility.”
The Significance and Hopes for G-Artians
Commenting on G-Artians Connecting Week Yoon Dae-won noted “It is highly significant that an event is being held that leads the convergence of science technology and art especially when emerging artists and experts gather to exchange ideas.” He added however that “if more direct networking opportunities and enhanced channels for communication were introduced the event could become even richer.”
G-Artians 2024 Connecting Week served as a platform for exploring new possibilities where humanity technology and art intersect. Yoon Dae-won’s experimental work prompts deeper discussions on sensation and identity in the digital age inspiring us to rethink the boundaries of creative expression.
G-Artians 2024: Soaring as a Global Hub for Tech-Art
G-Artians 2024 Connecting Week was an international event held from December 1 to 3 2024 at the Daejeon Convention Center and WIP Square. The event offered a unique stage to showcase the fusion of science technology and cultural arts. Co-hosted by KAIST the Paik Nam June Art Center and the Daejeon Tourism Organization it was designed with the goal of evolving into a global hub for tech-art through creative innovation.
The interview took place on the second day of the event December 2 in the press room at the Daejeon Convention Center where various domestic and international speakers and stakeholders gathered to engage in in-depth discussions about the significance and achievements of the event.
Beyond mere fusion the event demonstrated a strong commitment to exploring new possibilities at the intersection of science technology and art with the aim of positively impacting future industries and society.
