Today in IP Encyclopedia we are going to look into sneakers making our feet comfortable and the intellectual property of a classic sports brand Adidas which became byword of sports.
First of all the brand name Adidas is derived from ‘Adi’ short for Adolf Dassler the founder of Adidas. He was born in Herzogenaurach in Freistaat Bayern Germany in 1900.
Growing up with his father a sewing engineer working at a shoe factory Adi naturally had chance to learned the whole process of shoe manufacturing from his father such as textile processing shoe washing tailoring and binding. Adi always liked playing sports. He was also handy enough to make his own more durable shoes tranquilly and sedulously in place of leather shoes that easily wear out in his mom’s laundry room.
Since his brother Rudolf Dassler have seen all the process of Adi he invited actual athletes and listen to the real problems of typical sport shoes and delivered their opinions to Adi. He made them wear the supplemented shoes that Adi made. After getting favorable responses they were able to receive the orders of soccer shoes across Germany. In 1924 Dassler bothers established the ‘Dassler Brother’s Shoe Factory (Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik)’. This factory in the form of handicraft in which 12 employees including the brother’s family produced 50 pairs of shoes per a day became a forerunner of Adidas later.
Once establishing the factory the first thing Adi did was changing the textiles. He replaced light and soft rubber textiles instead of firm leathers and this rubber shoes became an outset of Adidas sports shoes. The following year Adi invented running shoes with spikes on the soles and leather-hobnailed soccer shoes and got patent rights of them.
Thanks to the spikes on the bottom soles spike running shoes brought a new sensation to the athletic industry by making people stronger when they try to step on the floor and move forward. It stood out for the first time at the Amsterdam Olympics in 1928. Lina Radke from Germany wore these shoes and won the gold medal in women’s 800m race with the world best record. At the Berlin Olympics in 1936 it became a big issue that American athlete Jesse Owens won total four gold medals in 100m 200m 400m races and the long jump and made headlines by wearing the shoes.
In football industry the World Cup in Switzerland in 1954 was a huge steppingstone for Adidas towards becoming a world-class sports brand. At that time the West Germany national soccer team competed in the games with hobnailed soccer shoes made by Adi especially the final match against Hungary that was a strong team at the time became a big issue.
The final match was played on a wet field due to heavy rain which was intense situation because of the straight 2-0 goals from Hungary and a few minutes later the West German team made it 2-2 with straight goals in the first half. At the last minute of getting back to the second half the West German team changed their shoes with longer cleats to make up for slippery field problems due to the rain. In the second half at 39th minute Helmut Rahn’s winning goal which is called ‘Miracle of Berne’ turned the match around dramatically.
Adidas that clearly stamped their brand on soccer fans all over the world had made a record of manufacturing and merchandising about 450000 pairs of shoes in that year. People are continually obsessed with Adidas products with three straight line on them such as clothes sneakers and hats.
The reason why they have received lots of love steadily over time is maybe because of Adolf Dassler’s craftmanship principle ‘Only The Best For The Athlete’. Adolf Dassler who had the players wear his products and listened to them his shoes are intellectual property with craftmanship making always good products.
