Bae Jin-ju: An Emotional Stage Delivered Through Mothers’ Music
A Special Moment for MMM the Zainichi Korean Music Team Realizing Their Dream of Performing in Korea I Hope There Will Be More Programs Featuring Japanese Artists
At G-Artians 2024 Connecting Week MMM (Mama’s Moment Musical) led by second-generation Zainichi Korean conductor Bae Jin-ju took the stage. Composed of performers playing the gayageum violin piano and percussion MMM is a unique fusion ensemble that has been touring Japanese elementary and vocational high schools since 2006 to share their music.
This event was especially meaningful for Bae Jin-ju and MMM as it marked their first performance in Korea. Overwhelmed with emotion Bae expressed “I have dreamed of performing in Korea in my heart during my 15 years of musical activities and I am incredibly happy to have had this opportunity.”
MMM’s performance showcased a distinctive blend of Japanese traditional instruments and Western musical instruments. Although the unconventional stage layout—with the performance area open on all sides—initially created some nerves the warm response from the audience and the thoughtful care of the staff helped ensure the show’s success.
Inspired and moved by their experience on the G-Artians stage Bae Jin-ju hopes that this event will pave the way for even more diverse exchanges between Japan and Korea—and on a global platform. He expressed a particular wish for more programs in Japan that introduce G-Artians to a wider audience and enable greater participation.
“Japanese people really love Korea. I hope there will be more programs that allow them to experience Korean culture more deeply. It would be wonderful to see events where multiple countries come together.”
Looking ahead MMM plans to continue bridging Japanese and Korean cultures through music and to expand their activities on the global stage with a variety of fusion performances. They expect that international platforms like G-Artians will play a crucial role in making their aspirations a reality.
