The Korean Intellectual Property Office announced that from the 1st of this month a ‘Patent Prosecurtion Highway (Hereafter PPH)’ program will be implemented to shorten the acquisition period of Korean companies’ Malaysian patent rights to a year.

The PPH program is a system in which an applicant submits a patent application to another country when the applicant received a written decision of patent registration or notice of patent permission in one country for requesting patent registration from two or more countries.

Therefore due to the program the period for obtaining Malaysian patents by Korean companies will be shorten to one year which is total a three-years reduction.

The number of patents applied by Korean companies in Malaysia is gradually increasing from 160 in 2014 to 316 in 2018. Major items include IT semiconductors and petrochemicals which are mainly exported to Malaysia. Recently the popularity of K-beauty and K-food products that can easily accessed in daily life are also subject to patent application.

Through the PPH program with Malaysia it is expected that domestic companies will be able to settle in Malaysia even more easily.

Accordingly the Korean Intellectual Property Office said “In the future the KIPO will expand supports for securing overseas intellectual property rights so that our companies can increase their global competitiveness.”
