Samsung C&T Corporation applies for patent for floor slab specialized technology reducing floor noise

Samsung C&T Corporation announced on 23rd that they developed the technology that reduces floor noise by making the floor slabs thicker without impacting the floor levels and completed the patent application.

The technology developed this time ‘Floor noise reduction method by changing the thickness of slabs’ is a specialized technology that raises thickness of specific slabs to 250mm from the existing 210mm floor slabs and has a feature that can gain similar floor noise reduction effect to increase whole floor slabs thickness. Actually it has confirmed that when this method is applied it can realize almost 90% of vibration and noise reduction effect that could gain from raising whole floor slabs to 250mm.

It means a lot that it has no effect to the floor level of the building since there is no change on the thickness of the whole structure of the floors. Making floor slabs thicker has been mentioned as the most realistic method but there were limitation in applying it since the floor level is raised and it leads to the decreation in numbers of floor and house.

Samsung C&T Corporation initiated to solve the fundamental issues of floor noise through joint research related to structure type and finishing method with industry academy and research institute.

They signed research and service contract with Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology to prove actual floor noise level based on structure type of apartment and are planning to analyze sensory level of residents and develop floor noise goal level setting index with the University of Seoul‘s Laboratory of Architectural Acoustics. Also they are going to research finishing method to satisfy the standard of floor noise post-confirmation system coming up next year with KCC Central Research Institute.

Furthermore they are planning to research the most effective noise reduction structure type of apartment and build total 13 experimental house to prove the reduction effect.

The official from the floor noise laboratory of Samsung C&T Corporation said “So far the most of research for reduction of floor noise focused on performance improvement of materials but the floor noise laboratory of Samsung C&T Corporation is going to show innovative floor noise reduction method through various research in the field of structure type materials and method.”
