Korea Intellectual Property Office filters out fake products with AI … Acceleration of digital transformation
Learning more than 2 million cases of trademark and design 2 years of demonstration and trial operation
[Example of search – search of design and trademark images]
On the 14th the Korea Intellectual Property Office announced that they completed the development of trademark∙design image search system applied AI technology and will utilize it for screening and judgement from 15th.
Thanks to the opening of the service the existing method which was searching thousands of images with the unaided eyes has been reformed so trademark∙design judges will be able to reduce the time for searching and increase the accuracy of screening.
To establish the AI based image search system they used more than 2 million cases of trademark∙design images for AI learning data and went through two years of empirical study realization and trial operation.
The main function of the image search system is displaying the search result comparing application images and registered images in order of similarity.
Especially it is noticeable that it is able to recognize partial images from images combined multiple figures and search. For example when you search the images of bags you can search similar images of the appearance of the bag logos and characters printed on the bags at the same time.
Furthermore AI suggests a classification for trademark∙design automatically and supports to designate the classification code correctly.
Meanwhile KIPO has completed applying AI technology to the digitalization of a written document translation of oversea patent documents and recognition of patent drawing codes last year and in this year the development of a civic counseling chatbot intelligent patent search and automatic classification are ongoing.
The road map for improving the efficiency of screening and judging by adopting AI technology in patent administration has been progressed favorably and accelerating the transition to the digital government.
Jong-ju Park the director of Information & Customer Service Bureau in KIPO said “We can support screening and judgement faster and accurately by applying AI technology in search of trademark∙design” and “We will continue to carry forward digital transition in intellectual property administration field with intelligence information technology such as AI and big data”.
