An UV LED specialized company UVER announced on 26th that they succeeded in developing UV LED technology that kills 99% of Noro virus in three seconds that causes acute food poisoning and enteritis during winter.

UVER acquired a sterilization certificate of 90% in 1 second 99% in 3 seconds and 99.4% in 5 seconds from Seoul ST. Mary’s Hospital in which is an authorized Noro virus testing and inspection agency.

The technology which is applied this time is a high-density LED technology that installs dozens to hundreds of chips amputated from LED wafers on a specifically manufactured printed circuit board (PCB) per unit area.

It is a semiconductor integrated technology that requires highest level of skills that once one of the chips is faulty during the manufacturing then all of the LED that installed must be discarded.

The typical UV LED packages are able to be installed 1 or maximum 4 of chips per unit area but UVER’s technology is able to install maximum 70 to 100 of chips in the same unit area so it releases tens of times stronger power and has an advantage that can perform mass-sterilization from 50cm far away in a short time.

It can be applied to purification plants and water and sewages that handle water and can be used as a form of a sterilization lights in the places vulnerable to hygiene and handle food such as large-scale cafeterias restaurants in public facilities hospitals and nursing facilities. Furthermore it is able to be customized and applied depends on their use and environment such as sterilization systems and robots.

Noro virus is an infectious virus that survives in minus 20 degree Celsius and does not die in 70 degree Celsius for 30 minutes. It has a strong resistibility that can survive in high chloric water and not like typical virus it is active in low temperature and prevalent from winter to spring.

Especially ingesting uncooked seafood or contaminated water causes the infection and it is contagious among people due to direct or indirect contact.

Dr. Ji-hoo Kim said “The demand and inquiry about sterilization lights and systems from publicly used facilities and fresh food companies in which contains high-density of bacteria have been increasing” and added that “As an alternative of spray sterilization that has been criticized for inhalation toxicity UVER’s sterilization robots that safely sterilize with UV lights can be a smart quarantine method.”
