There are artists whose names remind of countries or regions. El Greco of Greece and Leonardo da Vinci of Vinci are those artists and todays painting introduces a mannerism painter representing a small Italian town Corregio. It is Antonio da Correggio famous for his noble religious painting.
Italy is a country full of very old cathedrals. There is probably no city in the country without a cathedral. From the Renaissance to modern times various artists have filled the cathedrals that represent the city with interiors ceilings and fresco murals so you can see exotic and jaw-dropping paintings in any Italian cathedral.
Corregio a small village in Emilia-Romagna Italy is smaller and less known than the famous Italian cities we know but is proud of the villages representative artist Antonio Allegri whose name replaced the villages name later on.
Born in 1489 Antonio was so talented that he learned a local style of painting the Regiemilian style of art. There are not many records of art education related to Coreggio but he traveled to Mantova in 1506 and was influenced by the works of various artists. Returning home he made his debut ‘Virgin and Child with Saint Elizabeth and the Young Saint John’ in 1508.
In 1514 he went back to Mantova and began to be recognized as an artist by drawing several works at the entrance of St. Andreas Cathedral. He was commissioned to paint altarpiece of Madonna by the Francescan Order of a nearby village and began to accept the mannerism style in earnest against the naturalism of the Renaissance when he moved to Parma in 1516.
His first masterpiece Camera della Badessa in 1519 dramatically changed the existing ceiling murals of cathedral. A diagonal lines were drawn from the end of the dome-shaped ceiling and the representative characters of the Bible were drawn between them. It was a new aesthetic experience for the Parma people.
The painting Vision of St. John on Patmos was painted on the circular ceiling of Parmas San Giovanni Evangelista in 1521 and also completed a mural on the circular ceiling of Parmas largest cathedral in 1530 Correggios masterpiece Assumption of the Virgin.
In the case of Assumption of the Virgin the essence of mannerism drawing is contained. The shortening method is efficiently used to give perspective and the unique and sensuous expressions that gives an optical illusion as if you are looking up at the real sky from a hole in the ceiling are impressive.
As these works were completed Correggio became a master of ceiling painting. Requests of ceiling paintings for cathedrals continued and he became a very busy painter. However the production of religious painting was stopped in 1530 after three works at the Galleria nazionale di Parma ‘Madonna of Saint Hieronymus’ ‘Madonna of Scodella’ and The Nativity’ ‘Maddonna of San Giorgio’ at the Dresden Museum of Art.
Since then Correggio had worked for his hometown Correggio until his death. He was always compared to Michelangelo and Raphaello because it was the late Renaissance but Correggio created his own unique cathedral decorative paintings with excellent mannerism expressions.
Just as the existence of Correggio made a small village to a meaningful tourist attractions even a small city is worth traveling if there is a work by a great artist. Looking at these beautiful ceiling paintings of the cathedral I hope the day will come soon when we can enjoy the culture and art of other countries.
