The Korean Intellectual Property Office (Commissioner Kim Yong-rae) and the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (hereinafter KOTRA President Yu Jeoung-yeol) announced that they will hold Good Tip Webina for Intellectual Property Rights in Major Countries online for four days from July 21 (Wed) to 26 (Mon). Webina is a compound word of Web and seminar which is a seminar conducted on the internet web.
Webina was prepared by the KOTRA Overseas Intellectual Property Center (IP-DESK) to secure intellectual property rights of Koren companies and support responses for disputes caused by Korean companies overseas expansion. In the Webina local intellectual property experts including IP-DESK advisory lawyers and patent attorneys located in seven countries including the U.S. China and Japan will attend to guide the procedures and precautions from application of intellectual property rights to registration major dispute examples and how to deal with them.
Starting with China on the 21st it will be held in the U.S. and Europe on the 22nd Thailand and the Philippines on the 23rd and Japan and Vietnam on the 26th the last day and question-and-answer sessions to resolve the curiosities of the applicant companies are also scheduled. In addition as a special corner there will be a one-on-one video consultation session for companies entering Chinese market on the 21st and a time to introduce cases of the intellectual property right violations and the countermeasures in the K-Food and K-disinfection sectors on the 26th.
Overseas Intellectual Property Center (IP-DESK): It refers to institutions established at KOTRAs local trade center in the countries that conduct tasks to closely support exporting companies of Korea such as providing information related to intellectual property securing rights and responding to disputes in the region. Currently It is operating 17 locations in 11 countries including China (6 centers) USA (2 centers) Vietnam Thailand Germany Japan Indonesia India Philippine Russia and Mexico (as of July 21).
The Korean Intellectual Property Office has been operating 17 IP-DESKs in 11 countries in cooperation with KOTRA and since last year it has introduced a non-face-to-face work system in line with the spread of COVID-19 to help resolve difficulties in intellectual property rights of exporting companies through video seminars counseling sessions and online legal consultations.
The number of legal counseling for intellectual property rights in 2020 was 10222 up 20% from 8527 of 2019 which is before the spread of COVID-19 and the number of applications for trademark and design applications through staffs dedicated to IP-DESK also increased significantly from 1329 in 2019 to 1564 in 2020. In addition in August last year it detected and seized 430000 K-brand counterfeit goods (2200s of genuine goods worth about 1 billion won) in China in cooperation with Chinese local police and arrested five of the manufacturing plant officials contributing greatly to the protection of the K brand in the local area.

To resolve these difficulties we are operating 17 IP-DESKs in 11 countries and we hope that this event prepared by IP-DESK will help Korean companies secure overseas intellectual property rights and respond to disputes.
