Selection of 20 new community radio stations
First to permit new community radio station in 17 years since the implementation in 2004 / Exclusive local information broadcasted participative content open to local residents

New community radios are opening to broadcast regional issues. It has been 17 years that they have been permitted since the implementation of the policy in 2004.
On July 21st of 2021 Korea Communication Commision (KCC) has opened the 30th KCC conference and made consideration and decision of 20 new community radios.
Community radio refers to radio broadcast that for small regions for si gun and gu that has power lower than 10 W. Every resident including vulnerable classes may participate to the broadcast and tell their stories. Community radios match the increasing desire of residents to participate in media production.
The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT Minister: Lim Hye-sook) has done a month of technical evaluation and the team of technical evaluation and consultation consisted of 20 professionals from National Radio Research Agency and Central Radio Management Service has supported by discovering matching frequency and locating viable antenna spots.
KCC collected voice of listeners made actual inspection conducted 5 days of evaluation by 8 professionals and listened opinions of representatives and producers for fair and strict judgement.
21 out of 22 stations surpassed 650 which is the index score. 1 of 2 stations with higher score survived in Sejong-si resulting in 20 stations finally decided as community radio.
By the establishment local residents may easily participate in media production. Also local information may be easily spread to overcome regional alienation and disaster.
MSIT and KCC said that they expect that the community radio may enhance local communication and bond to develop local society. They are planning to closely support the stations to ensure early opening and stable management.
