Tokyo Olympics owes a lot to Korea

The Tokyo Olympics is infamous for its negative issues. The Olympics may not have been held without the help of Korea.

1. Security

Japanese security companies were under the influence the broken relation. Though being the 3rd biggest market after US and Europe the number and size of security companies does not match which refers that domestic companies cannot provide enough security service in Olympics.

Korean security technology has proven its reliability in Pyeongchang Olympics by negating damage from cyberattacks. A cooperation system with the Organizing Committee was built that time. Wins a security company which is already doing business in Japan was a inevitable choice for the Tokyo Olympics Committee.

The limitation of hydrogen fluoride export imposed by Japan aggravated the Korea-Japan relation and the committee had to make undesirable forecasts Wins cutting off its security service. They had to rely much on Win’s decision to successfully hold the Olympics. Fortunately Wins did not change their attitude and the Olympics was held without security issues.

For 10 years IP deficit with Japan has recorded 800 billion won. Though it may not be big in size the case of Wins is a victory against Japan.

2. Ticket Selling System

Japan needed a stable ticket selling system to ensure the success of Olympics. Japan found the system that they needed in 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics. The system could handle seats payment and refund process in online.

‘Interpark’ already established its international ticketing system in 2002 World Cup and 2011 Daegu World Championships in Athletics. Interpark is the only company in the world that was responsible for ticket selling of World Cup Winter Summer Olympics. Japan had no choice but to ask for support for their success.

3. Doping Test

Doping test is an important factor in international sports competition. However Japan did not have stable technology to detect growth hormones. Therefore they asked for dispatch of doping professionals.

Japan requested for dispatch of professionals to Korea Institute of Science and technology (KIST). KIST is planning to send Son Jeong-hyun head of Doping Control Center and Doctor Seong Chang-min to transfer detecting methods of 850 prohibited drugs. Specifically Son and Seong are going to teach the newest detecting technology of drugs including EPO-erythropoietin. KIST is establishing analysis system of Brain-doping Gene-doping dried blood spot etc.

4. 5G Equipment

Japan was aiming for commercialization of 5G before the Olympics to follow the global trend in communication industry. They needed Korean technology to reach this goal.

Japan could not choose Huawei as their partner due to the opposition of US and Samsung Electronics was chosen as their 5G base station equipment supplier.

Conventionally Japan was hesitant in adopting Korean communication technology. Korean smartphones were far from popular in Japan. After the adoption Japan may have to Korea instead of US in communication area.

5. Car Payment System

Some developed countries showed their weaknesses under COVID-19 situation. Japan had weakness in credit card since most of transactions were made in cash. Naturally they did not have advanced technology in credit cards.

In Korea 50% of payment is made in credit card while Japan is 20%. Japan has 300 companies that issues credit card but only 100 of them have constructed IT system. The rest of the companies consigns their management which resulted lack of processing capability. McDonalds Japan only received cash until 2017 Spring due to this incapability.

Japan constructed its ticket selling system security system and wireless network by exclusively importing Korean technology. To follow the changed system a credit card transaction infrastructure must be built and Japan decided to import the system of Hyundai Card. Due to the implementation 150 million cases may be handled with ease in 365 days 24 hours. The development is welcomed by public and Hyundai Card expects 270 billion won of sales.

Though prepared with support of Korea the Olympics is held without audience forcing loss to Japan. 10 trillion won of card payment was expected but the non-audience policy is halting the sales.

Fox Sports Australia published the article titled ‘Swimming in poo: Fears of sewage leak in Olympic venue’. The problem is serious since the typhoon ‘Nepartak’ is hitting Tokyo at 27th day of the month and may result flooding of sewage which may harm swimmers. Japan unreasonably accused Korea for this issue claiming that Korea has reignited the issue.
