The Ministry of SMEs and Startups (Minister Kwon Chil-seung hereinafter MSS) announced that it will select seven makerspace specialized labs and introduce 3D manufacturing virtual lab based on Cyber and Physical Systems (CPS) for the first time in Korea.

Makerspace which has the equipment and facilities necessary for creation and production is a space that helps any citizen of Korea to realize innovative ideas and leads them to actual start-ups.

This selection was based on the Makerspace Efficiency Plan for Revitalizing Start-ups which was announced on May 14 with the aim of expanding professional labs to boost manufacturing start-ups showing a competition rate of 5.7:1 for professional labs and 8.9:1 for general labs. Hongik University (Sejong) Gangwon Information Industry Promotion Agency (Chuncheon) Mokpo National University (Muan) Hoseo University (Asan) Daegu Technopark (Daegu) Gumi Electronics & Information Technology Research Institute (Gumi) and Chungbuk National University (Cheongju) were selected as specialized labs.

Among them Hongik University received the best evaluation by proposing the establishment of a system to support manufacturing start-ups based on design in line with the increase in the youth population of Sejong City. Therefore as North Gyeongsang Province Sejong City South Chungcheong Province and North Chungcheong Province were selected to have specialized labs the labs will be built in all 16 cities and provinces across the country except Jeju.

For general labs Yonsei University (Wonju) Geoje Maritime Tourism & Development Corporation (Geoje) Kumoh National Institute of Technology (Gumi) Marine Industry Research Institute for East Sea Rim (Uljin) K.O.A (Seoul) Baehwa Womens University (Seoul) Eulji University (Seongnam) Jeonnam Creative Economy Innovation Center (Yeosu) Narae Motor (Seoul) Baekseok Culture University (Cheonan) Suwon Sustainable City Foundation (Suwon) Sangji University (Wonju) Catholic Sangji College(Andong) Masan University (Changwon) and Gongju National University (Cheonan) were selected.

DMB (Incheon Metal) CTNS (Changwon Secondary Battery) and Pathfinder (Busan IoT) were selected as general labs that will be converted into specialized labs that support manufacturing start-ups with expertise in specific fields.

In addition 3D Manufacturing Virtual Lab which enhances product development such as design and production by combining virtual reality and reality based on Cyber and Physical Systems (CPS) will be introduced for the first time in Korea through public-private cooperation which will dramatically save the time and cost of product development.

Dassault Systems the worlds No. 1 company in 3D design and simulation will provide software worth of 10 billion won and consulting for three years and the government will support initial costs for building equipment and facilities while Korea University which operates 3D Manufacturing Virtual Lab in conjunction with existing professional labs will provide space and professional manpower and build a metaverse studio where working is possible in virtual reality.

Noh Yong-seok Director General for Startup Promotion Policy of MSS said We will reorganize Makerspace into a cradle of manufacturing start-ups worthy of its name and develop it into a key infrastructure for the nations manufacturing start-up ecosystem while providing support to create results by strengthening follow-up support such as design marketing and distribution.
