The appearance of AI artists is drawing attention as paintings drawn by AI programs are being sold at auctions or paintings drawn by AI themselves appears. This article would like to introduce ‘The Next Rembrand’ an AIs reproduction of the artists style in the 17th century.

Organized by Dutch advertising company J. Walter Thompson The Next Brand project was sponsored by global financial firm ING Bank and Microsoft (MS) to carry out the. In addition the AI was produced for about two years with the help of data analysts SW developers and artists.

The Next Rembrandt is a reproduction of Rembrandt Van Lanes work by Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The AI learns through deep learning and draws with a 3D printer. In the process of deep learning it analyzes 346 artworks of Rembrandt to create data.

After that it is drawn with a 3D printer that reproduced the texture of the picture and the brush used by Rembrandt by using paint-based UV ink.

The technology was implemented by calculating even the direction of brush strokes and the height of paints and the outcome of the 3D printer consists of 13 layers of more than 148 million pixels.

After ordering AI to draw a white man in 30s with a beard and black clothes it drew a painting in 18 months with big data that it had collected and made its debut in 2016 imitating the color composition technique and surface texture of Rembrandts work to the extent that it is evaluated as the resurrection of a painter who died 350 years ago.

The expert who saw the work analyzed that it shows compared to Rembrandts works the mid-term characteristics which is Rembrandts golden age.

Bas Korsten CEO of J.Wilterthompson said The goal of this project is not to create Rembrandts work. It is to start a conversation about how data and technology can be included as art.

In addition an IT (Information Technology) industry worker said AI artists can recreate the paintings of masters who have already passed away infinitely adding It is still at the level of recreation by imitating the style of existing creators but soon there will be an era when AI will create a new style.

Some are divided over whether to grant the copyright of Next Rembrandt who recreated Rembrandts painting style and created a new painting.

South Korea the United States Europe and Australia only recognize and protect human works while in the UK they recognize the copyright of AI works to the creators of AI or programs. In the case for the works of The Next Rembrandt J. Walter Thompson will have the copyright.

While the number of works created through AI is expected to increase further it is analyzed that intellectual property rights such as copyrights need to be reorganized accordingly.

In June last year the theme was also covered at the UNESCO Cultural Diversity Convention Expert Debate organized by Korean National Commission for UNESCO and the Art Council Korea and hosted by the Ministry of Culture Sports and Tourism.

Professor Lee Sang-wook said citing Next Rembrandt as an example It is fine to say that Next Rembrandt was actually created by humans. We need to think about viewing artificial intelligence as a human tool or collaborating with humans.

Meanwhile J Walter Thompson with The Next Rembrandt won the Grand Prix for Cyber Lions and Creative Data Lions at The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity a global advertising festival.
