As the development of driving technology starts in earnest expectations for display technology using windscreens of vehicles are also rising. If the level of autonomous driving increases in the future drivers can use the vehicles windscreen as a wide screen to get the list of nearby restaurants and tourist information watch movies or enjoy games. The technology that enables this change is the Head-Up Display.
A windscreen of cars is evolving. As the head-up display function for vehicles is expected to expand from providing simple road guidance information to the area for improving the convenience of drivers such as movies and games related patent applications are also active.
According to the Korean Intellectual Property Office (Commissioner Kim Yong-rae) the number of patent applications related to head-up displays for vehicles increased by 14% annually from 27 in 2011 to 102 in 2020.
For the applicants large companies lead applications with 49% (434 cases) followed by small and medium-sized companies with 13.5% (114 cases) and universities and research institutes with 6.7% (60 cases) and so on.
The survey showed that many technologies are being developed by Hyundai Mobis (93 cases) Hyundai Motor (80 cases) and Hyundai Autron (71 cases) which are companies related to domestic automobile production.
Recently patent applications from electronics and telecommunication industries such as LG Electronics (57 cases) Samsung Electronics (36 cases) LG Innotek (17 cases) and SK Telecom (17 cases) have been actively filed
For the technologies the technologies to improve video quality accounts for the largest portion (412 cases 47 percent).
In addition to it the technologies to minimize devices or prevent degradation of component performance (155 cases 18%) technologies to detect the surrounding environment (127 cases 14%) and technologies to control images using the drivers gestures eyes and voice (79 cases 9%) are also actively filed.
Recently in addition to two-dimensional images digital hologram methods displaying three-dimensional images using holograms are also being developed. It is expected that the number of related patent applications will gradually increase due to its advantage of having high tangibility and providing larger images even in a small space.
Examiner Lee Soo-han of the Korean Intellectual Property Office said With the growth of advanced automobile industries such as electric vehicles and autonomous vehicles patent applications for head-up displays are expected to increase further in the future and Automatically adjusting the brightness and location of images depending on the driving environment seems to be an important factor that will determine the competitiveness of head-up displays in the future.
