At the Pyeongchang Sliding Center the national training center for bobsleigh and skeleton an artificial environment implementation chamber * and a virtual reality simulation training facility (simulator) based on cutting-edge technology were installed.
* A sealed facility capable of multi-purpose training through controlling the air pressure of a chamber (negative and positive pressure)
The Ministry of Culture Sports and Tourism (Minister Hwang Hee hereinafter the MCST) has been promoting the Performance Improvement Support Project for National Athletes to develop core technology for collecting and analyzing the data of which athletes are suitable for the characteristics of each sport and game and training data since 2018 with the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation (Chairman Cho Hyun-jae). It is targeted to support each 1 sport of summer and winter seasons. Through open recruitment for bobsleigh and skeleton the Korea Bobsleigh Skeleton Federation is having league with KIES (Korea Information Engineering Service) and for soccer the Korea Football Association and POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology) are selected as research and participating institutes provided a total of 10 billion won for five years until 2022.
In the chamber it is possible to train high-altitude adaptation and physical recovery by adjusting negative pressure that controls air pressure and positive pressure that enables high-concentration oxygen breathing. It is the first time in the world that a negative and positive public chamber is used for bobsleigh and skeleton training.

The virtual reality simulation training facility will provide a simulation training environment by implementing 10 stadiums around the world in virtual reality including the Beijing Winter Olympics stadium in 2022. The Korean national team which has difficulty in field training due to COVID-19 can continue training through the worlds first bobsleigh virtual reality facility.
Like this VR (virtual reality) AR (augmented reality) and MR (mixed reality) which are applied to sports sites such as national team training is comprehensively called XR. Recently the demand for the non-contact industry is increasing and the interest about it is rapidly increasing due to COVID-19. According to the analysis of the National IT Industry Promotion Agency the promising areas of XR convergence are expected to be education and training manufacturing shopping medical care and defense.
XR is expected to be more utilized in education and training industrial sites and has low barriers to entry. Thus it is being promoted to verify safety and other technologies and apply them to the field by applying XR technology first focusing on education and training areas that are likely to be replaced.
In addition through this support project Jincheon Training Center has set up an indoor start training center to help improve performance based on athletes data. The start training center can collect integrated data with sensors and images and analyze athletes posture and movements. In addition research is also underway to localize the device that micro-process the surface processing device for sleigh runners (blades) into mechanical type and automatic type.
The Korea Bobsleigh Skeleton Federation plans to apply the negative and positive public chamber and virtual reality simulation training facilities to the national team for the Beijing Winter Olympics from early September.
A policy official from the MCST said We will strengthen support for sports science based on high technology to minimize the risk of injury and improve the performance of sports athletes including the national team.
