Finding Protective Measures for Overseas Copyright of Korean Wave Contents

The Overseas Intellectual Property Protection Council was held to discuss the status of infringement of Korean Wave contents intellectual property and countermeasures and ways to create a distribution culture for legal use.
The Ministry of Culture Sports and Tourism(Minister Park Yang-woo) said that the Overseas Intellectual Property Protection Council strictly followed the quarantine guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19 restricted onsite attendance and conducted online video conferences on the 17th. 2 agendas were proposed at the conference: A plan to protect infringement of contents on a global distribution platform and a plan to create a distribution culture for legal use of intellectual property.
Participants suggested that there is a need to monitor illegal distribution abroad and support local legal costs as well as efforts to raise awareness of protection of intellectual property in countries where infringement is occurring. In addition cases of effective response to the infringement of overseas copyright were also shared. The Korea Animation Industry Association solved the companys problems by deleting about 3600 illegal files that were exposed from the last August to October through the Copyright Overseas Promotion Association introduced at the conference.
The Korea Copyright Protectio Agency supported the rapid cooperation of a company which holds rights when the video of BTSs online concert BTS MAP OF THE SOUL ON:E was illegally distributed on the bilibili site in China in the last October. 171 illegal Internet addresses (URLs) were deleted and damage was minimized due to the cooperation.
In the future the Ministry of Culture Sports and Tourism will support dispute settlement of lawsuits about distribution of illegal copies of Hallyu contents mainly from overseas and in order to more effectively solve the crimes International Cooperation Project with Interpol (21 700 million won) and the Overseas Copyright Protection Usage Rights (21 1.8 billion won) will be pushed ahead from next year.
In addition the Alternative Dispute Resolution(ADR) will continue to be operated in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to help resolve international disputes related to the intellectual property. The World Intellectual Property Organizations alternative dispute resolution system is available for free from December 2020 to February 2021.
The 1st Vice-Minister of the Ministry of Culture Sports and Tourism Oh Yeong-woo said The industry of cultural contents is a future food industry that has a great influence not only on direct sales but also on exports of other industrial sectors. The Ministry of Culture Sports and Tourism will continue to actively support Korean content companies so that they can actively enter the world and receive proper protection.
