Law firm Gamwoo announced on 30th that World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) distributes Lawyer Young-wook Lee’s copyright law cartoon ‘Let’s draw a Dream’ as an educational cartoon internationally. Lawyer Lee is a partner lawyer in law firm Gamwoo.

In 2020 domestic culture and art copyrights trade balance recorded the surplus for the first time. It is explained as a result of new Korea wave made of K-pop popularity by BTS syndrome K-drama and webtoon. In 2020 South Korea ranked fourth in the world in the rank of countries for international patent applications released by the WIPO a U.N.-affiliated organization.

Before 2009 South Korea was classified as intellectual property infringing country. However through remarkable development Korea finally joined content advanced nations such as copyright. Korea is in the position where they have to emphasize an international protection of copyright such as infringement of Korean games or distribution of Korean webtoon translated in many languages on foreign illegal site.

‘Lets draw a dream’ is a copyright law webtoon that lawyer Lee has been drawing for one year since last year. It received attention since it has been drawn by lawyer not cartoonists or webtoon artists and produced and released jointly by Ministry of Culture Sports and Tourism and WIPO. It had been released in Korea for the first in the world and is about to be released online as a webtoon and distributed as publication soon.

The webtoon is total 20 pages and made up about noticing the dangerousness of pirated edition. The younger brother ‘Na-gool’ who is good at drawing between the raccoon brother and sister got frustrated since he saw that this character was copied and used for many products. Meanwhile sister ‘Na-ring’ felt guilty since her favorite foreign six-member cat idol group ‘Starstar’ was agonizing over illegal sound source downloading. Later the raccoon brother and sister made an special relationship with ‘Starstar’ through the trial of the bulldog brothers who is making pirated edition.

WIPO requested printing cartoon at the first time but thanks to lawyer Lee’s suggestion webtoon version was produced together. According to lawyer Lee WIPO was amazed saying “What is webtoon?” to the suggestion of webtoon. Lawyer Lee explained “It is the Internet cartoon originated from Korea and is popular since people can watch it on the Internet or smart phone.” Eventually WIPO decided to produce and distribution of webtoon version after a debate.

Lawyer Young-wook Lee after graduating Korea Universitys department of Law in 1995 won a bronze prize at ‘Shinhan Sprout Cartoon Award’ with a short cartoon and an award for short story and an award for best picture with short animation at Seoul International Cartoon & Animation Festival (SICAF). After this he never stopped drawing cartoon while passing judicial examination and working as a lawyer.

Lawyer Lee has been drawing four-cut cartoon ‘Lawyer 25 hour’ on the Korean Bar Association news paper for 16 years and published about 15 cartoon books such as ‘All sorts of copyright story’ about interesting copyright precedent in Korea and ‘100 questions 100 answers of YouTube copyright in cartoon.’ Especially the first edition of ‘All sorts of copyright story’ published in 2015 and about 60000 copies of revised edition have been distributed to elementary school middle school and high school nationally in 2021.

Lawyer Lee said “When I was in college I mostly spent my time in cartoon club every day. I was wanting to make a debut as a cartoonist near my senior year but I failed and became a lawyer by passing judicial examination instead. I am still thinking being a cartoonist is not a business that anyone can do but I am planning to create meaningful contents now and forever” and added “I will support by explaining my experience and law knowledge that I have been accumulated in a cartoon in a simple way.”
