On the last 25th Professor Park Seongpil of KAISTs Graduate School of Intellectual Property visited WIP News to discuss the role of Wip News as a platform of intellectual property in Korea and the current state of intellectual property with a representative reporter Gim Soowoo.
Representative Reporter Gim Soowoo: Please introduce KAIST Graduate School of Intellectual Property.
Professor Park Seongpil: KAIST Graduate School of Intellectual Property offers a masters course and the doctors course as a curriculum. The affiliation is affiliated with KAIST Moon Soul Graduate School of Future Strategy. Since 2010 the Korean Intellectual Property Office has supported KAIST and started as a practical training course for intellectual property experts. We are studying with people who have experience in various fields including the legal profession related to intellectual property.
Representative Reporter Gim Soowoo: How did you who majored in law become interested in intellectual property?
Professor Park Seongpil: When I was an undergraduate one teacher emphasized a lot on intellectual property rights. I didnt get much interest at the time but after that I was studying IP while studying at law school. At that time I thought of the teacher a lot and thought IP is the basis for all parts of our life and the future of our economy depends on that. So I majored in the intellectual property during my doctoral course.
Representative Reporter Gim Soowoo: What would you think which is the best intellectual property?
Professor Park Seongpil: I think the invention of the Internet has the greatest impact on our lives now.
Representative Reporter Gim Soowoo: Do you have any industrial property rights or copyrights that you have?
Professor Park Seongpil: I have the copyright for the thesis or a book I wrote.
Representative Reporter Gim SooWoo: Could you tell us about anyone who has made achievements in creating and revitalizing the intellectual property ecosystem in Korea?
Professor Park Seongpil: I would say a former Minister Seo Jeongwook. The Minister has many achievements. There are many achievements such as an electronic exchanger localization of TDS and commercialization of CDMA for the first time in the world. I believe that former Minister Seo Jeongwook has established the basis for saying that Korea is very advanced in IT.
Representative Reporter Gim Soowoo: What would you like to introduce to the world through WIP News?
Professor Seongpil Park: There is a lawyer Lim Youngik at Intellicon Lab which is in the field that I am interested in. They provide artificial intelligence lawyers and AI-based legal services. And they won first place in the world competition for two years in a row. AI cant replace all legal services right now but if you compete against a specific topic AIs performance is excellent. We are looking forward to future technology artificial intelligence which is being progressed.
Representative Reporter Gim Soowoo: How long should we wait for an AI lawyer or an AI jurist?
Professor Park Seongpil: They are already being used now. If we set the criteria so that leaving the work entirely to artificial intelligence then it will take about 10 years at least.
Representative Reporter Gim Soowoo: What kind of effort is required for Korea to become a more powerful intellectual property powerhouse?
Professor Park Seongpil: I think that Korean private enterprises and the government have done well from various aspects. In terms of IP5 standards we were in a hurry to bring IPs of advanced countries into Korea among IP5s so far. I think Korea should export intellectual property to the outside now.
Representative Reporter Gim Soowoo: Could you express intellectual property in one word? Intellectual property to me is ㅇㅇ.
Professor Park Seongpil: It is language. This is a story that I talk about a lot in my class. When a new technology or new product comes out it is registered as a patent. What the patent attorneys do is to communicate about the technology and change it into a language. So I think Intellectual property is language. Because human knowledge is expressed and communicated in language.
Representative Reporter Gim Soowoo: Do you have any wishes for Wip News?
Professor Park Seongpil: I wish Wip News become a global new media platform in the field of intellectual property. I hope that it will become a channel for experts to express their various thoughts and a platform that introduces the technologies of great start-ups and major companies in Korea and the Korean Wave(Hallyu) culture with experts opinions. I hope that WIP News will become the IP New Media Global Platform.
