Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Lead Koreas Industrial ECHO System Using Daejeons IP Base WIP News Is Expected to Grow Significantly
Korean Licensing Executives Societys Chairman Gim Gwangjoon and WIP News Representative Reporter Gim Soowoo are having a conversation.
On the 15th the chairman of the Korean Licensing Executives Society (Chairman Gim Gwangjoon) visited WIP News (Representative Reporter Gim Soowoo) and talked about the direction and policies of intellectual property in Korea. At the same time they discussed the role and the direction that Wip News should pursue in the filed of IP in order to grow into a media of intellectual property.
Representative Reporter Gim Soowoo : Please introduce the Korean Licensing Executives Society.
Chairman Gim Gwangjoon : Korean Licensing Executives Society is the Korean chapter of the historic association Licensing Executive Society International. Licensing Executive Society International is an association created by countries such as the United States Japan and Europe etc. We have corporate members in various fields from large companies such as LG and Samsung to startups.
Representative Reporter Gim Soowoo : How did the chairman a US patent attorney become interested in the field of licensing?
Chairman Gim Gwangjoon : Licensing is said to be the flower of IPs EHCO cycle. We talk about creation and protection but licensing is closely related to monetization. A lot of lawyers are participating and I am participating too.
Representative Reporter Gim Soowoo : What motivated you to become interested in small and medium-sized enterprises IP?
Chairman Gim Gwangjoon : Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the main pillars that lead Koreas industrial ECHO system which does not have huge plans. I think SMEs are important because I think that they can be developed into large companies and help start-ups a lot. Not surprisingly there are many companies that have grown very successfully and have a big vision because SMEs are good at licensing. SMEs are important to our lives and to the growth of the country.
Representative Reporter Gim Soowoo : How many countries and how many people should subscribe to WIP News in order to WIP News can be named Worldwide Intellectual Property Portal?
Chairman Gim Gwangjoon : Congratulations on the publishing of WIP News. I think this question itself has value to stand in the ranks. There will be many standards but as I mentioned at the beginning there are 33 member states based on the Licensing Executives Society International. IP5 is a representative powerhouse. I think that if IP5 successfully gives the meaning of participation it will be a successful start.
Representative Reporter Gim Soowoo : What great intellectual property do you know?
Chairman Gim Gwangjoon: I think intellectual property with global riches would be good. I think Coca-Cola is a good example which can be said to be number one in many ways. First it has brand value. Second. It has Coca-Colas recipe the worlds number one trade secret. Thats a good example. It is expected that intellectual property such as Coca-Cola will be released in Korea soon.
Representative Reporter Gim Soowoo : Do you have any intellectual property such as copyright or patent?
Chairman Gim Gwangjoon : When I worked for a company I was interested in technology a lot so I had patents but even before I worked for a company I already had my patents and experience in selling them. My patent was a US patent and there was a patent that made the life around you be easier using a mobile phone. It is a patent device and a technology that expands the cell phones functions. My personal patents can be licensed or sold. I chose to sell and the purchaser would have licensed it.
Representative Reporter Gim Soowoo : Do you have any skills or people you would like to introduce to WIP News?
Chairman Gim Gwangjoon : Including Korean Licensing Executives Society there are so many. It is difficult to choose. I will tell you later.
Representative Reporter Gim Soowoo : Do you think that Korea can be called as an intellectual property powerhouse? What is needed to become an intellectual property powerhouse?
Chairman Gim Gwangjoon : I want to say that Korea is a powerhouse but it has not yet. There are trade balance and current balance. Similarly there is a countrys IP balance of the transaction. Through this balance of transaction you can check whether it is a surplus or a deficit. There are many standards but they are counted annually by the World Bank in the United States. Countries with a surplus and a deficit in the world according to the IP balance of transaction are listed in the total results. As for the surplus countries the United States ranked first Germany ranked second. And recently Japan has grown a lot and incorporated. In fact there are not many countries with a surplus and Korea is also in red. In order to become a real powerhouse I think that the goal in the future can be the improvement of the balance which can be seen as an indicator and becoming surplus.
Representative Reporter Gim Soowoo : Which country is it with a severe intellectual property deficit?
Chairman Gim Gwangjoon : The reason for the large deficit is that the countrys technology is used a lot. For example Qualcomms communication technology and 5G technology are still being used but even in the case of 4G and 3G since Qualcomms technology was used from the time CDMA came out there was no choice but to generate royalties for the technology. Besides one of Koreas major national axis is also generating a balance of license. There is a deficit with the US Germany and Japan.
Representative Reporter Gim Soowoo : If you express intellectual property in one word Intellectual property to me is ㅇㅇ
Chairman Gim Gwangjoon : It is the future of Korea. I think that it is the direction we should go and the direction to suggest and look forward in order to become a powerhouse.
Representative Reporter Gim Soowoo : What if you have any wishes for WIP News which was created to help promote intellectual property easily and become a hub country of intellectual property in the world?
Chairman Gim Gwangjoon : The general media much of the IP side was in the metropolitan area but Daejeon has many excellent research institutes. WIP News has started in Daejeon. When it comes to IP especially patents we cannot talk about research and development separately. Daejeon has very good soil and foundation. I think if you use good things on a good foundation you can achieve great growth.
