Korea Copyright Commission Appoints 12 New Members

Former Ministry of Culture Sports and Tourism Planning and Coordination Office Director Kang Seok-won Appointed as 6th Chairman

Yoo In-chon Minister of Culture Sports and Tourism (hereafter MCST) appointed 12 new members to the Korea Copyright Commission as of Friday June 14 2024. The new members will serve a three-year term (from June 14 2024 to June 13 2027) and except for the chairman will serve in a non-permanent capacity.

The newly appointed members include:

Kang Seok-won former Director of the Planning and Coordination Office at MCST
Gye Seung-gyun Vice President of the Korean Intellectual Property Society
Kim Myung-joo Professor of Information Security at Seoul Womens University
Kim Min-jung Attorney at HwiMyeong Law Firm
Kim Byung-il Professor at Hanyang University School of Law
Kim Won-hak Chief Prosecutor at Daegu District Prosecutors Office
Sung Yoon-yong Adjunct Professor of Applied Music at Yeoju University
Yoon Joo-tak Attorney at Sejong Law Firm
Lee Sang-ho Judge at Suwon High Court
Lee Won-bok Professor at Ewha Womans University School of Law
Im Hyung-joo Attorney at Yulchon LLC
Jang Hye-won Attorney at Kim & Chang
This appointment replaces the outgoing members whose terms have expired. In accordance with Article 112-2 of the Copyright Act the new members comprised of experts from academia law cultural industries and the public sector were selected to reflect the diverse interests and respond to changes in the copyright environment. The commissioners will handle tasks such as mediating copyright disputes reviewing fees and royalty rates for copyright management organizations establishing proper usage of copyrighted works and promoting fair use of copyrighted materials.

Meanwhile during the full committee meeting held on June 14 the Korea Copyright Commission appointed Kang Seok-won as its 6th chairman. Chairman Kang has previously served as Director of the Planning and Coordination Office and Director of the Copyright Bureau at the MCST.

Minister Yoo In-chon stated With the appointment of these new members I hope the Korea Copyright Commission will strive to protect the rights of creators and promote the fair and smooth utilization of copyrighted works especially in the evolving environment driven by advancements in AI technology.
