Presidential Council on Intellectual Property held the Artificial Intelligence-Intellectual Property Conference on the 4th to mark the day of intellectual property in order to accelerate social discussions and actively promote communication with the public on the tasks under discussion by the Artificial Intelligence (AI)-Intellectual Property Special Committee (hereinafter AI Special Committee).

Through the conference Lee Sang-jik chairman of the AI Special Committee said We will come up with a tangible and detailed policy to resolve uncertainties in industries and research on artificial intelligence and intellectual property and to promote economic and social innovation. He also added that he will lead international discussions by establishing pan-governmental initiatives principles and setting courses.

In the last debate session Professor Son Seung-woo of Central University announced the introduction of the Artificial Intelligence-Intellectual Property Special Act to resolve the uncertainty of the current intellectual property law and develop the artificial intelligence industry. Professor Lee Dae-hee of Korea University the head of the committee and panels from industry and academia held heated discussions on various issues including whether artificial intelligences creations need to be protected at the same level as humans inventions and works.

Below is an interview with Professor Lee Dae-hee who participated in the conference.

Q1. Please introduce yourself.

Professor Lee Dae-hee: This is the professor Lee Dae-hee of the Graduate School of Law at Korea University.

Q2. Why do you think intellectual property is significant?

Professor Lee Dae-hee: It is the driving force behind the development of culture and the framework of the society and the country.

Q3. What do you think is the best intellectual property in the world? Why?

Professor Lee Dae-hee: Worldwide the invention of ironware and Hangul in Korea. I think Hangul is a great invention in that it is an invention of letters.

Q4. If you have any intellectual property such as patents designs trademarks copyrights trade secrets etc. please introduce it to us.

Professor Lee Dae-hee: More than 100 papers are my intellectual property.

Q5. What do you think Korea should strive to become an intellectual property powerhouse?

Professor Lee Dae-hee: Intellectual property is an exclusive right. We can say a country is a powerhouse only when protection is most basic and then well utilized.

Q6. Last question! What would you describe your intellectual property in one word?

Professor Lee Dae-hee: To me intellectual property is culture and technology. All works can be cultures. Patent and industrial property rights are technical skills. Culture and technology determine the countrys international competitiveness.

Professor Lee Dae-hee who headed the debate graduated from Korea Universitys College of Law and Graduate School of Law and worked at the University of Wisconsin School of Law. He served as a member of the Presidents Personal Information Protection Committee a member of the National Intellectual Property Commission a member of the Seoul Central District Court a member of the Personal Information Protection Committee a member of the Korea Copyright Commission a member of the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) Arbitration and Settlement Center a panelist a member of the Korean Internet Dispute Settlement Committee and an Asian Domain Name Dispute Resolution Centre (ADADRC). He also has a lawyers license in New York the United States.
