Sharing Koreas Extensive Experience and Legal Systems in Copyright Protection and Enforcement
The Ministry of Culture Sports and Tourism (Minister Yoo In-chon hereafter referred to as MCST) in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO: Director General Daren Tang) and the Ministry of Culture Sports and Tourism of Vietnam (Minister Nguyen Van Hung) will host the WIPO International Symposium on Copyright Protection and Enforcement in Hanoi Vietnam from June 17 (Monday) to June 21 (Friday). The Korea Copyright Protection Agency (Director Park Jeong-ryeol hereafter referred to as the Protection Agency) and the World Trade Organization (WTO Director General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala) are also supporting this event.
30 Experts from 15 Countries Discuss Effective Copyright Protection and Infringement Countermeasures in the Digital Environment
In 2006 MCST established a trust fund with WIPO to support developing countries in the field of copyright. In 2014 a second trust fund focused on copyright protection and enforcement was established to continually support the improvement of the global copyright protection environment and raise awareness.
This symposium is one of the various support projects for developing countries conducted by MCST in cooperation with WIPO. It expands on the Meetings of Copyright Protection and Enforcement Officials held in 2019 and 2023 making it a more comprehensive international cooperation program. At this event international experts and over 30 public and private experts from 15 countries will share information and experiences on key issues related to global copyright protection and enforcement in the digital environment. Participants include copyright policy experts judges prosecutors and lawyers from 10 Asian countries* the Middle East (Jordan) Latin America (Brazil Mexico) and Africa (Kenya Zimbabwe) facilitating discussions on international cooperation based on the diverse circumstances of each region and country.

Korea Shares Extensive Experience and Legal Systems in Copyright Protection and Enforcement
At this event MCST has arranged for various Korean experts to present Koreas rich experience and legal systems related to copyright protection and enforcement.
Ahn So-young Deputy Director of the Cultural Trade Cooperation Division at MCST will introduce the Korean government’s policies on copyright protection and enforcement and the economic contributions of the creative industries.
Lee Yong-il Director of the International Cooperation Department at the Korea Copyright Protection Agency will share the agencys activities related to combating copyright infringement including the online monitoring system.
Professor Lee Dae-hee of Korea University will discuss the development of copyright-related case law in Korea and future challenges in copyright protection and enforcement.
Professor Kim Kyung-sook of Sangmyung University will present on the deliberations and administrative measures related to copyright infringement by the Korea Copyright Protection Agency.
Choi Tae Secretary-General of the Korea Copyright Promotion Association will cover public-private cooperation and collaboration with copyright holders in copyright protection.
Jeong Hyang-mi Director of the Copyright Bureau at MCST stated With the advancement of digital technology the ease of accessing copyrighted works has increased leading to serious issues of illegal copying and distribution which significantly impact K-content. She added We hope that this symposium will facilitate the sharing of effective copyright protection and enforcement experiences among countries and the discussion of joint countermeasures creating diverse cooperation systems between governments and between the public and private sectors.
